Are point guards taking over the league?

I wrote an article about this a while ago, but it seems to be more and more true especially this season. Almost every legit team in this league has a point guard that is a star and that dominates their team. Rose, Rondo, and Westbrook are three of the point guards that are emerging quickly. We already had Paul and Williams beasting, and John Wall looks like he will be a superstar on a good team one day as well.

For how long will we see point guards dominate the league before it turns back into a "big man" game?

At the moment, yes. Right now the league is saturated with strong PG play like never before. They aren't even prototypical PG's, but they are a new breed with crazy athleticism and all-around ability. Guys like Paul, Williams, Rose and Westbrook all are very well-rounded players that can run an offense, score at elite volume, rebound the ball and defend well. We are witnessing a revolution in that regard, just like the '90's with big men, and the early '00's with explosive, well-rounded wing players. Eventually we will see a new wave of players that revolutionize a certain area of the game, but I don't think it will be in an old-fashioned sense; meaning, we will continue to see players of all positions becoming more well-rounded, and being developed in ways that players of the past weren't. But, these waves happen, so let's enjoy this current crop of PG talent.

Let's not damper a good post by saying things like Russell Westbrook knows how to run an offense.

Here's Westbrook's mindset.

Is Kevin Durant wide open coming off a wing brush screen or down screen? If yes throw him the ball. If not, gotta go launch myself at the basket, maybe after a screen. This isn't to say he's selfish, or doesn't pass, or is Allen Iverson reincarnate, but he isn't exactly a point guard.

Westbrook is a very talented ball-dominant shooting guard playing the point but his limits in running an offense hold the Thunder back. He's not as advanced as say a Brandon Jennings or a Derrick Rose or even an Aaron Brooks. Which actually underscores your point even more in that there ARE so many well-rounded point guards that can run an offense.

I disagree, I think Westbrook is actually a decent passing PG. He's good off the pick-and-roll (he actually looks for the roller, which Rose doesn't always do, which was on display at the FIBA's) , and of course very good off dribble penetration. He can't run an offense like Williams, Paul, or Rondo do, but he's adequate. He's a more willing passer than a guy like Brooks, and Brooks can't play defense or rebound, which is why I didn't include him in that particular group of PG's (same with Rondo, who I didn't include because he can't score at volume).

Oh I agree with you, he's a talented and willing passer. He just doesn't know how to run an offense.

And, when the smoke clears, the Lakers are defending champs with Derek Fisher (lol) as the starting point guard...and, really, he's more of a two-guard.

Hell, so is Blake.

We don't even have a real point guard.

But, yes...there are a lot of talented point guards out there, but keep an eye out for the PF's as well. Dirk, Amare, Garnett, Griffin, Gasol, Love, Boozer, Odom, Bosh, West, Aldridge, Duncan...a lot to talk about.

I believe PF's have take over the league, not the PG's.

Griffin

Love

Dirk

Amare

Duncan

Gasol

Bosh

Boozer

KG

Smith

Scola

Randolph

Aldridge

I dont think that list can be argued against. PF's run this league, but the PG's are a solid second.

Haha. Good call. :D

True, but Duncan, Dirk, KG, Randolph, Amare, Bosh, Gasol and Boozer have all been around for awhile now. Rose, Rondo, Felton, Paul, Wall, Williams, Westbrook, Jennings, Brooks, and Collison all have 5 years or less of experience, with a bunch of them coming in the last 2-3 years. I think the PF wave started to fade out a bit in the mid-'00's, while the PG wave is still going strong. That's not to say that the league isn't saturated with strong PF play, because it is, but I think the PG craze is bigger at the moment.

Yes they are but right now it is a PF league.

Griffin - 21

Love- 22

Aldridge - 25

Bosh - 25

Smith 25

Lee - 27

In say 2-3 years it will more than likely change to a PG's league.

We have a lot of talented big men in the league just as the chosenone named:

Griffin - 21

Love- 22

Aldridge - 25

Bosh - 25

Smith 25

Lee - 27

But right now, yeah the Point guard position is the most talented one in the NBA for sure.

Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo, Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, Tyreke Evans, John Wall, Darren Collison, Devin Harris, Raymond Felton, Brandon Jennings, Jameer Nelson, Jason Kidd, Tony Parker, Steve Nash, Andre Miller, Baron Davis, and Gilbert Arenas.

Again, though, the topic is about who is currently taking over the league. And in the last 4-5 years, specifically the last 2-3 years, there has been a bigger influx of great PG's than there have been PF's.

Yeah I understand that but right now it still is a pf league, not pg.
