Ross Tucker/FOX Sports (via Twitter) - An NFL scout told Ross Tucker of Fox Sports that he believes Auburn quarterback Cam Newton could be the first overall pick in April's draft.

"If VY went #3 & Tebow 1st Rd, wouldn't surprise me at all if Cam Newton went #1. His upside is limitless," Tucker wrote on his Twitter page.

RealGM's Jeff Risdon has Newton going seventh in his last mock draft.

He's like a Josh Freeman or a Big Ben. I hope the Skins draft him despite drafting a QB before out of Auburn (Jason Campbell).

Freeman matured in such a short time which makes me think Cam can get it down. His motion looks fine to me, and he's obviously more mobile. Take into account his size, star power, and success and it becomes difficult to find someone to compare him to accurately. Tebow is probably the closest, except Newton seems more talented. I doubted Cam before because he came out of nowhere as a prospect, but after looking at him a little more in depth, he seems really special.

because they needed a QB. Clausen sucks, time to move on

He's also a rookie. Give him his time and let him mature into a system.

As for Newton, he's dead to me, because he won in the NCAA's monopoly scheme. I doubt the Panthers take Newton 1st overall; if they will pick a QB, it'll be Mallett or Gabbert shooting up the board, a la Sam Bradford. While I hate Newton, I do recognize that he's a good quarterback, but Gabbert and Mallett are better conventional passers, and I'm sure that that's what Carolina will be looking for, since their running game is already terrific (I think Mike Goodson can fill the void that would be left if DeAngelo leave's via free agency).
