When does a little losing skid turn into an epic slide? We’d say right about now for the Cleveland Cavaliers, losers of a staggering 21 straight and 31 of their last 32 games. They sit at a league-worst 8-40, the first team in the league to reach 40 losses. Last season, they were the first team to 40 wins.

They are just four losses shy of the NBA record for most consecutive games lost, territory no team wants to enter. (Coincidentally, that would break an NBA record the Cleveland franchise already owns — a 24-game slide that spanned over two seasons, from March to November 1982.)

Turning a blind eye to their plight worked for much of the past couple months. But we can’t ignore them anymore. Not with them on a collision course with history. They’ve lost 24 straight road games. Twenty-four straight.

"Again, the Cavs lost LeBron James to Miami. And then, the Cavs lost to Miami, period. Again. And not the "again" that makes you think, "Oh, right, they lost to Miami back on December 2nd." ("And on December 15th.") No, this is the "again" that makes you think, "Oh, right, they lost again, just like they've lost to every NBA team in every NBA game that they've played since way back before I decided to bring home that new Wii and HDTV combo along with the rest of my holiday shopping." Technically, it was every game since December 18th. And technically, that's 21 straight games played and lost since. Only two other NBA teams have ever done that. One of them was the 1997-98 Nuggets. And the other one was the 1995-96 (Vancouver) Grizzlies. Interesting. Raise your hand if you're shocked - shocked - that the Clippers aren't on that short list."

24

So the Cavs have lost 21 straight games. So what? So they've also lost 24 straight road games. And that's only tied for the league-high. (League-low?) But at least they've won on the road. Thrice, actually. The Wizards haven't, not even once, dropping to 0-24 away from Washington after a 10-point loss in Dallas. Of course, the NBA record for consecutive road losses to start a season is 29 by...

Wait for it...

Hands up if you think it's the Clippers...

Nope. It's the 1992-93 Mavericks.

You serious, Clark?

It's really sad to see the Cavaliers struggling so badly this season. It's been a long time for them that they've faced such a huge losing streak.I think it's time for them to put their anger on the court and win it tomorrow against the Pacers.

Even though Indiana is a good team this season, I think Cleveland has the chance. Everything is possible in the NBA especially when they won their first game against an elite team.

Update:

The Cavaliers lost their 22nd-straight game, this time by 5 at home to the Pacers. And this skid is now two shy of the all-time NBA record, because it's two shy of the all-time franchise record. Because the Cavs put a bow on the 1981-82 season with a 19-game skid, then popped the cork on the 1982-83 season with a 5-game skid. That one ended with an overtime win against the Warriors. This one could end Friday night, if they can escape with a win in Memphis.
