Don't know where the Nationals claiming Wandy came from, but it was on multiple message boards earlier.

Unless they knew Ubaldo was just a 1 year wonder.

Cobb
Sorry for not putting up a thread tonight guys. I had planned on doing it at school during classes but was not able to get my computer to connect to the wireless network. Braves win 5-4 and Craig Kimbrel matches MLB rookie record with his 40th save. Jason Heyward also hit his first career grand slam.
Phightins
Can anybody share any insight on Johnson for me? I don't really watch much ball outside of the Jays so I don't know much about him. From what I've read he has some nice pop and strikes out a lot. How is his defense and things like that? PS: From the press conference that AA had (with Hill and McDonald), it sounds very likely that McDonald will be back next season. You basically said it. Lots of strikeouts, lots of power potential (for a middle infielder especially). He isn't quite a butcher in the field, but he isn't particularly good either (advanced stats have him in the middle of the pack of starting MLB second basemen). When he first came up with Atlanta, I always figured he'd wind up in the outfield full time eventually, but I guess he doesn't have the arm. Meaning he will bring the Jays a first round pick (or at the worst, a very high compensation pick/2nd rounder) if he signs elsewhere. Probably the real motivation for the trade. Probably the real motivation for the trade. Yeah, I already knew that part. I thought he was only going to be a type-B free agent, but apperantly he actually is a type-A free agent according to MLBtraderumors. I know that AA has been interested in him in the past so he probably figured why not get a 6 week or so look at him to end the season and if he likes what he sees he will bring him back. If he doesn't like what he sees he will let him walk and pick up the compensation pick in the process. It is a win-win either way if you ask me, especially since there isn't much of a market for 2nd basemen this summer, at least as far as I know. Cleveland's Finest
Well, it looks like Jim Thome is coming back to Cleveland. It's been almost ten years...I was a little kid when he played for us and always watched the Indians...to think ten years later he's back...really amazing. He pulled a Carlos Boozer, he promised he would stay, then left for more money. BUT he never won a title. So this time, let's see if playing the loyalty card will help him. I really hope the Indians make this next month fun, regardless of actually making the playoffs. Just make it a race.
Phightins
I am certainly happy that he bailed on Cleveland. I would argue that that one signing single handedly changed the Phillies culture.
Cleveland's Finest
But didn't you guys win after he left? lol or do you mean they started getting big names then?
Phightins
But didn't you guys win after he left? lol or do you mean they started getting big names then? At the time, they took a lot of flack for not spending money. They had recently traded away Scott Rolen and Curt Schilling for nothing. Nobody wanted to play here. Then Thome came here and literally everything changed... Well, several other key events happened too (moving into new ballpark, farm system finally producing legit talent, etc). But Thome was big. Opposite field, upper deck at Citi Field. Unreal. He now has a .902 OPS in 522 plate appearances as a 21 year old. Basically unheard of, unless your name is Albert Pujols...or Babe Ruth. Cobb
Looks like Stephen Strasburg will make his first start of the year at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 6th. According to ESPN, he is already owned in almost 50 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues. :o

Not like that was planned or anything I don't see why that's a bad thing... gives the Nats more money. So what, it's a business. If there's anything that should be a cause for concern, is that the Nats have no chance at the playoffs, so I don't see why they'd bring him back so early and risk further injury. But other than that I'm happy for Strasburg

But obviously they are not going to turn away from four guaranteed sell outs.
Cobb
With 27 games left for Matt Kemp and the Dodgers to play, does he have a chance of getting into the 40-40 club? He is currently sitting at 31 HR and 35 SB, however he is on pace to get 37 HR and 42 SB.

Phightins
Joe West is a joke. Seriously, retire already. Normally I'd be more pissed since the Phillies got screwed, but this is actually one of the most intriguing baseball situations I've seen arise in a long time. This is going to have a very, very interesting aftermath. Joe West still sucks though.

Phightins
Lots of ins and outs, but here is the short of it.  Joe West decided to use instant replay for something other than a questionable home run (fan interference on a double). And he wound up reversing a call, directly resulting in runs coming off the board. The Phillies are now playing the game under protest.  I actually think the Phillies have a good chance of winning the protest, but I just don't think it is worth the hassle. The game is essentially meaningless, and should they win the protest, they will have to fly down to Florida at some point to re-play the game from the point in question. With no more days off in the schedule, it will be a scheduling nightmare for something that doesn't matter much. The bigger issue is that Joe West has yet again made the headlines about him, and not the game. Also, even though this was a non-reviewable play under the current rules, things like fan interference should absolutely be reviewable in the future. Wonder if this incident leads the push for more expanded replay. Edited September 4, 2011 by Phightins
