I know there are other ways of getting tv onto your computer but id rather do it through WMC.

long story short im going to uni and want to watch tv through my computer to save money and space.

so im pretty confused about how to watch tv on my computer. if it doesnt make much sense im sorry

i dont know how to really start but try to follow...

okay so i know need a Tuner hardware to be able to watch tv on my computer (ill be buying a internal one for my computer "Leadtek WinFast DTV2000DS Dual HD Tuner" http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=13328)

okay once i have that ill need a Digital set top box to plug into my tuner so then i can pick up the Australian free to air channels (am i right? this is were im unsure of things.)

then ill need a AVG cable (i think its AVG OR AGV) going FROM my graphics card TO the Digital set top box (am i right again?)

after all that is that all i need to be able to watch tv on my computer?

so ill have the digital set top box connected via AVG cable http://agcomputers.com.au/images/Ritmo%20VGA%20Cable.jpg to my graphics card then ill also have a TV cable http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/images/rf-cable.jpg going FROM my Digital set top box TO my Tuner Hardware

much appreciated if anyone can help iv been looking on google and nothing helps me

thats a VGA cable. you won't need to do anything with that.

im not sure how Australian television broadcasting works. it might be as simple as taking a coaxial from the STB to the tuner card.

the VGA cable will just go from graphics card to monitor or TV like it currently is. WMC will scan for channels.

Since you're using a STB though, that is probably decoding the channels already. You might be able to bypass STB all together and go straight to the tuner card.

that is how it works in the US(the tuner works as an STB). most TVs in the US don't require an STB unless you are paying for a more premium service as US TVs are required by law to have an ATSC tuner(used to just need an NTSC tuner). All others cannot be sold as TVs and must be sold as monitors. Do you get any free HD channels with it?

yea its got HD but im screen isnt HD

well in Australia the newer TVs all have STB built in them but with mine its a bit older and i have a STB to get all the digital channels (its a must to have now they are removing free to air TV) so i just thought because i was going to get a internal tuner that i would need a STB with it, idunno why didnt know much about them and kinda made sense to me at the time

but I never even heard of watching TV on your computer until yesterday when my brother said it to me
