NBA looking into modifying the draft?

While there wasn't much negotiating during the meeting and very little progress was made, one intriguing concept was proposed by the players. Rather than changing the salary structure to level the playing field for small market teams, an alternative was proposed that would involve making drastic changes to the draft process.

The union made the argument that the quickest way to turn around "crummy" teams is through the draft. Because first-round picks have become so valuable in today's NBA and many teams have had success building a roster with this model, the union feels that the best way to increase parity is to focus the draft around the underachieving teams.

The fourteen non-playoff teams that make up the lottery would not only receive the first fourteen picks, but the next fourteen as well. The team that wins the lottery would receive the first overall pick as well as the fifteenth overall pick. The second team on the clock would also own the sixteenth pick, the third picking team would also own the seventeenth pick and so on.

Each team would receive two first-round selections so that the top twenty-eight players go to the teams that are struggling and the playoff teams that need the least help receive second-round talent. Those playoff teams would follow the same structure in the second round with two late picks each. The union is willing to lower the number to the eight worst teams, but they feel this is a much better way for the league to level the playing field.

This is unbelievably stupid, and this is coming from a fan of a team that would benefit from this.

The best way to build a team is to get a top 3 pick, not by accumulating mid first rounders like this would suggest; this would do nothing. Also just because teams struggle to get out of the lotto doesn't mean the playoff teams should lose the opportunity to replenish their youth with later picks. If they want to change anything about the draft, let high school kids enter and if they go to college, make them go for 2 years.

Honestly, I would like it if playoff teams were in the lotto as well, or maybe the bottom 4 seeds in each conference. It almost feels like being a low seed is a punishment. You go to the playoffs and get owned in 5 games at most, then you don't even get a chance to move up in the draft. I mean we obviously don't want an LA or a Boston to wind up drafting John Wall, but it would be cool if a team like Charlotte, Indiana, Philly, etc, still had a chance to move up a few spots.

Owners and union representatives had a closed-door meeting in L.A. this All-Star Weekend. "While there wasn't much negotiating during the meeting and very little progress was made," Alex Kennedy reported Saturday at HoopsWorld, the players proposed a complete overhaul of how the annual draft functions.

The NBPA suggested that non-playoff teams receive two picks in the first round with playoff teams receiving none -- that playoff teams get their two picks in the second round under a similar format at the first round for the lottery teams:

Interesting idea, but I don't see it ever happening. If people are upset about tanking now, could you imagine how badly teams would tank in a situation like this?

I wouldn't mind the league adapting the MLB free agency situation where if another team signs your "Type B" free agent, you get their first rounder the following year and if a "Type A" free agent is signed you get their next two firsts or something. I think that would be a nice addition to the league, but that may just be me.
