The Truth
yeah, I have no idea how this stuff works. I got this off another site: What is a soft cap? What is the difference between a soft cap and a hard cap? Which does the NBA have? The NBA has a soft cap. A hard cap doesn't allow the cap to be exceeded for any reason. A soft cap, which the NBA has, contains exceptions which allow teams to exceed the cap under certain conditions. In practice, very few teams are ever under the cap during a season.so obviously, teams can exceed the salary cap, but only under 'certain conditions.' what those conditions are is the real question. according to hoopshype, Deron can opt out of his contract after next season and become an unrestricted free agent. even if he wants to play in New York, I don't see how we'd be able to afford him with Amare and Melo alone taking up over half the payroll. NomarFachix
It's a soft cap because you're allowed to make trades to go over, use a MLE to go over, etc etc. With a hard cap, you wouldn't be able to go over for any reason whatsoever. AboveLegit
Is there any way he'd be able to sign for the MLE and then get a max the next season via Bird Rights? (I have no idea about contractual stuff like this)I think you must play 2-3 years before you can obtain Bird rights, and I don't see D-Will being that desperate. Suns shot that offer down, they wanted Caron Butler, which we refused to give them... it's probably one of the biggest mistakes of the Ernie Grunfeld era. And I said I want a player to openly state that he wants to come to DC...

Gotcha, thanks. Definitely not desperate enough to settle for MLE for three seasons, no... Haha. Would seemingly have to be some sort of sign and trade scenario, if anything at all.
