New York draws the line in the sand for Carmelo

you wouldn't throw Gallo in there to get Melo right now?

If they came back and said throw in Gallo and he's yours... I probably would. But I wouldn't do a Felton/Billups swap. I'd make my line in the sand what I said, though, and not what has already been offered.

If Carmelo truly won't go to New Jersey, and he very much wants to be in New York, he'll do what it takes to get here. He'll walk in FA into our facility and we'll be contenders. If we trade the proposed package right now for him, it'll be another bunch of work to get to a serious contention level, and with Isiah peeking around already... Could end in disaster.

The deal they put on the table is enough. If Denver wants to move him; they will. If they don't and want to risk him signing the extension, that's what they'll do. They've gotten more out of the Knicks than they could've ever hoped for.

I would still make the deal that's on the table now:

Felton, Gallinari, Chandler, Curry, and pick for Anthony, Billups, Balkman, and Williams

Chandler, Curry, Billups, and Williams are all essentially expiring contracts and I doubt any of them would have a future with the Knicks anyway, so the trade basically boils down to this:

Felton, Gallinari, and pick for Anthony and Balkman

why would I make this deal? obviously, you're getting a superstar in Melo. you're also getting an extremely affordable Balkman, who'd probably fit D'Antoni's system especially well. with Balkman, you could probably get rid of Turiaf and save some money there.

I hate parting with these players, but here's why I'd still be able to sleep at night:

[*]Felton - he's been great for us, but he doesn't have a long-term future with this team. I'd rather trade him now while his value as at an all-time high and chase after the superstar free agent point guards available next summer.

[*]Chandler - he's an expiring contract and he'd want big money to stay with the Knicks. it wouldn't be worth it to pay him the $7-10M he'd demand from us this summer.

[*]Gallo - I don't think he'll ever be a star. if he proves himself in Denver, maybe we bring him back after next season when he becomes a free agent.

ultimately, I think those three guys are worth it for Melo. he'd take us deep into the playoffs this year and having him on the team would probably make it easier for us to sign Paul or Williams next summer. I think it makes us more attractive to all free agents.

(sigh) w/e bro. I'm not gonna explain my thoughts on the Melo trade any further. anytime I make a long, thought-out post, there's some [expletive] there to nitpick at the one little detail that's debatable.

I consider the second round 'deep into the playoffs' because there's only four rounds total, assuming you make the finals. I didn't say they were going to win it all this year. I just said Melo will take them further and help them attract other free agents.

this man is a top ten player in the entire league. he's starting in the damn all-star game tonight. I'm not gonna say you guys are too shortsighted to think this makes sense, but, well, yeah I am, actually.
