I wouldn't mind trading for him either but if the Rockets want to be players in free agency this year, taking on Thabeet's contract for one of our larger expirings is going to hurt our chances.

MINNEAPOLIS — The Grizzlies had serious discussions Wednesday with the Houston Rockets regarding a proposed deal that would swap second-year center Hasheem Thabeet for forward Shane Battier.

A deal would hinge on Memphis’ willingness to also include a future first-round draft pick in its bid to reunite with Battier. The Griz failed in their initial attempt to acquire Battier earlier this year and may try to enlist a third team to avoid sending the Rockets a pick.

So Thabeet + first round pick for Battier's expiring? That isn't all that bad. I wonder if Houston is also requesting that Battier be bought out, not sure if Memphis wants to do that considering that they are making a run for the playoffs.

I don't see how this deal doesn't get done, really. Houston won't trade anyone without a big involved, and Memphis is dead set on getting Battier (they really have to, now with Gay out). All Chicago can do is give them Asik (for Lee), and I would think Houston would take Thabeet just for the project, plus the first-rounder.

^Exactly. Why trade Lee for an average defensive center when you can simply move Battier for a potential goldmine (although potential projects don't work out often) plus a pick for our trouble? Sure this hurts our cap space a little but this team needs to start taking risks for once.

The good thing about Thabeet is that he has a team option after next season. Houston can take a test drive for 1 1/2 seasons, then decide if they want to pay him that $6 million.

Good point. If Thabeet doesn't work out then we can simply not pick up his team option and if we preserved our cap space from this offseason then we should have sufficient room to do some damage in the 2012 free agency.

Get it done!

I think this is worth the move as both of you have said. Thabeet is another project but I was listening to the radio and they were saying if Houston can maybe get Hakeem or Deke to work with this kid it may do wonders for him... his passion for the game is questioned but when you desperately need size you have to gamble.

Shane will be missed big time in Houston but is basically loved everywhere he goes, Memphis fans would love to have him back everytime the Rockets play the Grizz he gets an extra ovation for all he's done for the community etc
