Denver Post: Anthony Isn't A Great Player

Recommended Posts

Terry Frei of the Denver Post recently wrote an article questioning Carmelo greatness. Here is what he had to say:

But, yes, it has been fun to notice that some folks who should have known better all along finally are catching on to Anthony's act. Because it will have to concede that its story line required buying into a flawed characterization of Anthony as a True Superstar, it might take the league's cable propagandists a little longer to come around to admitting that Anthony is not a great player.

Not sure who's arguing he's a great player...I classify great as the Jordan's, Kobe's, LeBron's...just to name a few over the years. Carmelo is not on the level, obviously..

Melo can actually play defense, if he sets his mind to it... I would even go as far to say that he could be a 1st All Defensive Team. He has quick feet, quick and strong hands, he is physical, and can keep in front of even quick guards. But since he rarely sets his mind to it...

Defense aside, I think he has become more all around... he now easily gets 7 rebounds and 5 assists to go with 25 pts any given night.

In his first 3-4 years, he was strictly a scorer, but since Billups came, he has become more all around with those rebounds, assists, steals as well... but defense is still up in the air.

Melo's not efficient enough to be a great player because he still has no idea how to play without the ball. His scoring opportunities aside from broken court spot ups come from post ups, or face-ups at the elbow where he either drives or shoots a stepback jumper, all with a side cleared for him. He's prone to taking bad shots and has never shown he can play effective defense for more than a pair of games at a time. He does rebound okay (but only okay), and he is a good post passer, but he'll massage the ball and won't give it up unless its a last resort.

Most statistical measures like Wins Produced per 82 minutes rate Melo between the top 10-20 players in the league which is about where he should be.

He rebounds okay? He's top 4 in the NBA in rebounding amongst forwards.

With an a good, but not special 12% rebounding percentage. He's played heavy minutes for two of the fastest paced teams in the league, of course his raw numbers will be up, but he's not anything special as a traffic rebounder. Teams don't really crash the glass against Denver and the Knicks from the backcourt because of the threats to run. A lot of his boards come right to him.

Still I think call him an 'okay' rebounder is a bit much.

If you have problems with your eyesight then maybe he is. Melo is strictly an all-around scorer, while Wade is a driver who rebounds well and gets assists.

He gets assists because he runs PG for the Heat, that's all, of course if you run PG you are going to get assists, but Wade is by no means a good passer, Wade is a G that plays like an F, Melo an F that plays like a G, both are only great scorers.

Lol you gotta be stupid to think that D-Wade is only a scorer. And that Melo is on his level. He's a great defender, can rebound, pass, steal, block. And he is a much more effective scorer than melo. Melo's a very good player, D-Wade is a great player.
