Raptors to Pick up Triano's Option?

Recommended Posts

Getting a read on the Raptors' future, much like Detroit, will be a lot easier if the Raptors are indeed sold in coming months along with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment's other properties.

Insiders maintain that current Raptors governor Larry Tanenbaum, should he keep that role after the sale as widely expected in Toronto, badly wants to retain Bryan Colangelo as team president. Colangelo's contract expires June 30, but sources say it's a virtual lock that his long-anticipated contract extension will be pushed through as long as Tanenbaum retains his part-owner status.

Only then can you properly assess Triano's status as head coach. The Raptors have a team option on the Canadian-born Triano for next season -- which the Raps are said to be leaning toward exercising despite the team's extremely painful first season after losing Chris Bosh -- but Colangelo is the first domino.

The prospect of the Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs being sold only got serious this month, so it remains to be seen how much is resolved here before the NBA draft on June 23, which falls precisely one week before Colangelo's contract runs out.

Triano here for another year to command the tank and then the Raptors go out and get a real coach?

Sign me up!

Seriously though, I can't see the Raptors going out and giving out a long term deal to a new coach with all the ownership stuff up in the air. You might as well let Triano ride out his contract and then once all of the ownership drama is settled, the new owner(s) will be able to assess what they want to do and bring in their own coach.

At least that is how I see things going down.

Might as well keep him rather than hire another rookie coach. I mean if we've got an accomplished coach lined up, then by all means give him a shot. I just really hope next year BC doesn't go all out and try and be a playoff team again like he did last time we got Bargnani first. Let the team build naturally, my fear is if we DO hire a new coach, BC is going to be pushing for the playoffs.

Kyrie Irving would do wonders for you guys. I'm actually rooting for Toronto to win the lottery this year. I like everyone on that team minus Bargnani.

I honestly have no idea.

I would imagine if the OTPP are serious about selling their share of MLSE, it would be done before the beginning of the next season, but that is just speculation on my part.

There isn't even a guarantee that the OTPP are going to sell their share, so who really knows.

Jay Triano, Toronto Raptors: The Raptors believe Triano did the best possible job under difficult circumstances by developing a young team hit hard by injuries early this season, a league source said. The players like Triano, but the Raptors finished with the league’s third-worst record at 22-60 after losing Chris Bosh(notes) in free agency. He also hasn’t led them to the playoffs in three seasons.

Triano has a one-year contract option for next season that has to be exercised June 15, but two complicated issues cloud his situation. The contract of Raptors general manager Bryan Colangelo expires on June 30. Also, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan expects to sell its 66 percent stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, owners of the Raptors and NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, over the next few months. Those issues have brought confusion as to who will decide Triano’s fate.
