Right now...

1) Spurs (57-16)

2) Lakers (53-20, 4 GB)

Nine games left for both teams.

Duncan is hurt and not playing, Manu suffered a left quad contusion and could miss a few games.

Spurs have lost three in a row, and their remaining schedule:

vs. Portland

vs. Boston

@ Houston

vs. Phoenix

@ Atlanta

vs. Sacramento

vs. Utah

@ LA Lakers

@ Phoenix

Lakers are 15-1 since the All-Star break, and their remaining schedule:

vs. Dallas

@ Utah

vs. Denver

vs. Utah

@ Golden State

@ Portland

vs. Oklahoma City

vs. San Antonio

@ Sacramento

Is it possible? Sure didn't seem like it back in the middle of February. :o

If the Lakers finish these last nine games at 8-1, and the Spurs go 4-5, that would tie the two teams, and the Lakers would own the tie-breaker assuming they beat the Spurs in that last game against each other and end up with the better conference record (which would be likely if the Spurs go 4-5 to end the season).

Without Duncan for what could be the rest of the regular season, and possibly no Manu for a couple of games, the Spurs could be 3-6 to end the season, just looking at the games...which would give the Lakers more breathing room.

I think there's a good chance. If Manu and Duncan out, I could see the Spurs losing six straight until they beat Phoenix and even that isn't a walk in the park. Our Portland, OKC, San Antonio stretch is going to be huge, we need to go no worse than 2-1 and beat San Antonio in the process.

Lets say that the Laker do finish with the #1 seed, where would this put Kobe in the MVP race? I think it could make things pretty interesting.

Got to give the Lakers credit, at the All-Star break they were battling the Thunder for the 3rd seed and now they could potentially (although its unlikely) grab the top seed. Even if they don't finish on top they are still the the team to beat in the West.

It is very possible. Because first of all Tim Duncan is injured and the Spurs' losing streak's main reason is because of that. Second of all, the Lakers are red hot and I think only lost one game since the all star break so this could happen

Five consecutive losses, and they are playing Houston (who are going to fight) in a few hours.

If they lose to Houston, we'll be one loss behind them. They also play us pretty soon (the Spurs do). If we take that game, things get even more interesting.

I dont see the fight in the Spurs.. I've thought they were overrated all year.. Guess I was right.

I don't know. They played into their new offensive strategy well, which sort of threw Duncan aside in terms of him creating out of the post, and they went into a more guard-generated offense. Tony Parker has been absolutely amazing penetrating the defense, and Pop has taken advantage of that.

But at the end of the day, I think the Spurs will have to play more through Duncan to beat a team like the Lakers, and I'm not sure how successful that can be this season.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Thunder ran them to death in the second round, honestly.

Who would have thought this possible a week ago?

Seven in a row makes me wonder if SA (not that they're losing on purpose) aren't exactly going all out to win just for seeding purposes. Maybe they feel better playing a depleted Hornets team than a Grizzlies team that could give them a hard-fought series. Maybe they want to have the ability to dictate whether they have the 1st or 2nd seed depending on how the Hornets/Grizz do, something that wouldn't have happened if they clinched the 1st seed.

Or maybe I'm just looking too much into it and the Spurs are just going through a really rough stretch right now.
