Increased Role for Bayless Coming?

Recommended Posts

Following Wednesday's game, coach Jay Triano confirmed that Jerryd Bayless will have a big opportunity over the final eight games.

Triano didn't have any specifics on Jose Calderon's hamstring tweak, but it sounds like the starter is going to miss some time. "We're going to give Jerryd an opportunity here and we're going to let him play," Triano said. Even if Calderon ends up healthy, it sounds like the Raptors want to see what Bayless has. Bayless is averaging 14.5 points, 6.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per-36 minutes in 52 games with the Raptors this year.

Saw it on the Raps forum at RGM and there is no link. It would be about damn time this kid gets a shot, he is our most intriguing prospect imo because he shows flashes, but he is on such a short leash that he hardly is ever to play through his mistakes. He obviously isn't without his flaws, but he can't get better as a point guard unless he is able to play through rough stretches. Also finally it sounds like the tank might be getting turned on.

good to hear

worst thing bad/average teams can do is put short leashes on their young prospects - especially this late in the season where its not like you need your veterans to play a whole lot to get a playoff spot or something

ed davis went back to fewer minutes as soon as reggie evans came back, i think that wasnt the best move either

The only way for a young (and hardheaded) player like Bayless to develop any kind of consistency is for him to be able to play through rough patches, and learn what he can/can't do or get away with. Playing him spotty minutes and often out of position isn't going to help him develop any sort of consistency. He probably doesn't even know what his role on the team is (I sure as hell don't).

Bayless sucks, all he does is drive to the hoop and misses. He'll get one or two in at best but hes so damn predictable. Get him out of here.

He is actually decent at finishing at the rim. It is his jump shot that is completely broke. His eFG% inside the paint is 55%, compared to the 40% on jump shots.

Calderon is out for the next 2 games at least, so it should be nice to see him be able to just go out and play his game without having to worry about being yanked for the first turnover he has or missed jump shot or blown defensive assignment. He hasn't played great this season and Calderon has, for the most part, been solid, but it is pretty hard to do much when you are being jerked around as much as Bayless is.

The biggest problem with him is that his confidence seems to be completely shot. When he first got here, he was super confident and you could see from his play on the court, but since then he seems borderline depressed out there at times. He is an emotional player and you can tell that he is really down on himself right now, partially due to his play but probably due to the fact that he probably doesn't even have a clue what his role is on the team.

I disagree. I think Bayless is actually our least predictable player, for better and for worse.

Nope, he's def predictable. Everytime he has the ball I know what he's going to do.

I guess but still, he sucks. If he isn't confident then get him out. There is a reason Blazers and Hornets traded him. He sucks!

Put up 26/4/10 on 9-14 shooting tonight. One game, I know, but in the 8 games he has started in, he is averaging:

15.9 ppg/4 rpg/7.7 apg on 48.9 FG%.

Again, it is a small sample size, but it is no coincidence that he plays so well when he has a defined role on the team and doesn't have to constantly look over his shoulder in fear of being benched for the slightest mistake he makes.

You are all for dumping Amir Johnson and Jerryd Bayless, two of the Raptors better young players, but you constantly praise the play of one dimensional veterans like Reggie Evans and Jose Calderon. You are the definition of the type of fan MLSE looks for.

I do not praise Calderon but Reggie Evans gets us the boards. Dude is a beast at that. I guess your right about Bayless. He plays good when he starts.
