Dwight Howard. What he's done this year has been nothing short of amazing. When you talk about who means the most to his team, the easy answer is Dwight Howard. His stats are MVP worthy and at second in the league in PER, he is very deserving.

D-Rose for MVP, he's had an amazing season his team has the best record in the East and he has had this team on his back when Boozer and Noah were out with injury's. Dwight Howard comes in second without him the magic would be an 8th seed.

Derrick Rose. I think Howard comes in a very close second, much closer than people give him credit for, but I do think Rose deserves it. This dude has worked on his game hard and has gotten a lot better this season. Seems to be a leader, and is getting better and more committed on the defensive end. Who would have ever thought CHI would beat out BOS and/or MIA for the number one seed in the East this season? I really thought they'd be 3rd or 4th. The fact they'll be the one seed and a great shot at winning the title has to be credited a lot to Derrick Rose.

I might have been willing to vote for Dwight or Kobe if their teams managed to finish a spot or two higher, but I'll say Derrick Rose for obvious. What a year for him.

Derrick Rose...who had this team winning this many games? Some even thought the Bucks could win the Central Division. After a shaky start, the Bulls have been unstoppable. Despite injuries to Noah, Boozer, and others at certain points throughout the season, they have kept winning.

Kobe could've had my vote if the Lakers took the one seed, but that looks unlikely. As for Dwight, the Magic have been worse than previous seasons despite the huge trade. Also, he's been on and off throughout the year in terms of being a leader for his team.

Durant's worthy because the Thunder went from 8 seed to 4 seed, but the jump the Bulls took this year given the low expectations and injuries gives Rose the nod for me.

I voted for other and need to change it to Rose. I didn't want to vote for Rose---or any of the candidates---tried to make a cute argument for Amar'e Stoudemire, that didn't hold up, tried to make an argument for Luol Deng (whose impact has been criminally underrated. The last wing who was this strong on both sides of the ball on such a dominant defensive team was 2008 Paul Pierce). But whereas 2008 Pierce was Boston's go to scorer late in games, Deng isn't.

I had to go back to a post I created in 2008 to help me reel in the parameters of what constitutes an MVP:

Picking an NBA MVP is always difficult due to the undefined subject of what constitutes an MVP. An MVP should be a dominant player that is the driving force of his team's greatness. An MVP should be able to enforce his skills against even the most skilled of opponents.

An MVP shouldn't just be a player who plays at a high level, but one who has his team play at a high level because of him.

An MVP should only play for a team that has matched or exceeded expectations as MVP's don't disappoint.

MVP's should be able to dominate weaker teams because of their presence, and should be able to beat elite teams because of their tremendously talented and clutch play in close games.

Numbers should not matter in determining an MVP. Players are great on basketball courts, not stat sheets.

The first point invalidates Durant who still has trouble against the best physical defenders. The second invalidates Dirk whose Mavs have flattened out after an inspired start and have regressed to what they've been the past half decade.

The Heat and Magic have been disappointments this season relative to expected performance. You can also say the Lakers have been.

Finally, Kobe's been too inefficient in "Mamba Mode" to carry the Lakers this year. More than ever, the Lakers success is a result of the collection of players around Kobe and not just Kobe himself.

This leaves Rose. He's fantastically talented. He's been strong in the clutch. He's improved his defense, his point guard skills, and his shooting range. He's bought in to coaching. He's elevated his teammates. While he's still relatively inefficient, he's also more versatile than Dwight Howard (who would be my second choice).

In other seasons, he'd maybe be a top-three pick. But in a bad year for MVP candidates, my pick goes to Rose.

The media has already picked Rose a long time ago, so it's not worth arguing who WILL be MVP. There is no question.

However, you CAN make an argument on who truly deserves it. But if I were to speak about anyone other than Derrick Rose, I'm already going against the norm. And as you've probably guessed at this point, I don't believe the true deserving player to be Derrick Rose. Actually, when a saw this poll a few months ago on realgm asking who the MVP was so far that season - after a brief moment contemplating - I selected an answer, and was completely surprised to see Derrick Rose get nearly 50% of the votes. That's because I don't watch ESPN or NBA TV (unless I'm watching a basketball game), or read much basketball news other than the basic stuff, so I guess not much has influenced my opinion other than actually watching games and analyzing stats.

I discussed on a couple forums about the actual reasons the Bulls are good: their defense and their rebounding (which they are among the top of the league in both categories). Rose impacts neither. His impact is scoring, and the Bulls are only an average offensive team. Rose's offensive efficiency is also about average. He just has volume numbers because of his extremely high usage in the offense (though he does have the talent to maintain the average offensive efficiency despite the high usage).

Of course, all this and more falls on deaf ears. Months later, I start seeing articles by people like John Hollinger and someone on the NY times named Niel Paine (also the creator of basketball-reference.com) expressing similar points, and Stan Van Gundy echoed the same opinion on the media hype over Rose.

As for my opinion on who really deserves MVP? I once thought it was Dwight Howard. Advanced statistics (like PER and Win Shares) suggest that it's LeBron James.

After making my own statistical discovery, I'm starting to think Kobe Bryant deserves MVP this year. And may have been robbed of several more throughout his career. I'll make a final decision when the season is over.

I'm going with Rose like everybody else; however, Howard and Dirk have both made their cases for MVP as well

EDIT: Btw, the poll says "who should win most improved player", you might want to fix that lol
