Poe
This is a stat I invented I call Scoring Ability Rating (SAR). I don't believe anyone else has come up with it first. Do let me know if I'm wrong. I will be updating this thread with each team's player's SAR as I rate them. It may take a while, so I probably won't be finished with the whole league until at least a week from now. Keep in mind, while I won't reveal the formula yet, there IS possibly a flaw to the rating, which has to do with stats that aren't tracked yet. Whenever (if ever) they are in the future, that is when I'll be able to fix the issue. So for now, while it's best not take the rating completely literally, I do find it very accurate for what it is. Also remember, this is not so much about efficiency as it is about ability. Owner Real Deal Posted April 14, 2011 Owner Report Share Posted April 14, 2011 When you say the numbers are based on ability rather than efficiency, are you saying that the stat is partially based on how many ways a player can score? Poe
interesting, care to explain what the numbers mean? ;p Let's just say the highest single season rating I've calculated so far is over an 86.0, and that's Kobe Bryant's 2005-06 season. The lowest I've rated is Joel Anthony, and his was about -19.0 this season (yes, that's a negative rating). When you say the numbers are based on ability rather than efficiency, are you saying that the stat is partially based on how many ways a player can score? You can interpret it that way, yes. You can also interpret with certain players that they are so good at scoring in one area (say, three point shooting), that it outweighs their lacking in other areas. Poe
I don't like that Korver and Deng are comparable. Scoring. Not overall game. You can use PER for that, though it's quite flawed (for example, it doesn't take into account the ability to play on-ball defense, so Bruce Bowen winds up getting robbed and gets a PER of half the average player). Owner Real Deal Posted April 14, 2011 Owner Report Share Posted April 14, 2011 Shoot me a PM and I'll look around to see if the system has been used somewhere else before. I might try and talk to someone and find out how you can make it your own, if nobody else has touched it.

Poe
The fact that Novak is on par with Tony and Manu is pretty hilarious though. What this stat doesn't show is that Novak only gets garbage playing time in blowouts... Maybe you'll find his career SAR of 72.329 to be more accurate (which is STILL pretty high, though). Also, I'm figuring 68-76 is about starter caliber, while 77-79 is all-star. 80+ is superstar level. So according to this, Steve Novak is a starter caliber scorer. His ability to rebound and defend must be pretty damn poor for him to still only get garbage time.

Nitro
I have no idea what you're basing all this off of, but I have no idea how Melo and Kobe have a higher rating than LeBron when he scored more than both of them with a 4-5% TS advantage as well. If you're basing this off where they score from on the field, then I can maybe understand the Melo rating, but LeBron shot better from 2 and 3pt range than Kobe did. But, keep it up regardless....

Thanks for the observation. If you notice anything else, feel free to post about it. There is a reason I'm posting this here. What I would like to know the most out of the people here though - not based off of statistics but based off of watching and observing the players overall scoring abilities - would you say that the order is generally correct? Are there any players that look like they are rated too high/low? (like Steve Novak, for an extreme example) Edited April 16, 2011 by Poe
