If the collapse leads to another early playoff exit, I can't think of a reason why he shouldn't be. It's the same old story for the Mavs, 11 straight 50+ win seasons but nothing to show for it. The collapse in Game 4 just added more fuel to the fire

I don't know if this should get done. If the Mavericks are always choking in the playoffs it's because of the players that can't knock down anything or aren't playing the defense as they should be. If the Mavericks get 50+ wins for the 11 straight times but can't get it done in the post-season, don't blame Carlisle

It isn't like Carlisle has been with the Mavericks for all of the 11 of the 50+ wins seasons. In most seasons they were missing a piece, and this year is no exception. I don't think it is Carlisle's fault that they don't have a clear- cut second offensive option to go to.

Firing the coach isn't going to solve the problem.

They landed in the NBA Finals with Avery Johnson one season, then lost to the Warriors (the 8th seed) the following year, same coach.

With Don Nelson, Dallas made it to the WCF...then found out, the following year, that they weren't even getting out of the first round with Nelson.

The team really isn't built for deep postseason play. Aside from this season and maybe two others, they weren't much of a defensive team. Their scoring options weren't as consistent as they should be, either. It also doesn't help when Dirk (who is shooting less than 42% right now, in this Portland series) comes out and shoots 38% against the 2007 Warriors team that upset them in the first round.

Dallas doesn't fire from all cylinders when it matters most. They can light it up and get a couple of games in a series, but when it's all said and done, it's the players that need to be held accountable.

Basically this. They won't find a coach much better than Carlisle, but they certainly can make roster upgrades. I saw a post on RealGM that I feel is really true...some superstars get a Kobe/Pippen/Shaq/Wade/Gasol/Garnett as a sidekick, and some get a Jason Terry. As well-balanced as the Mavs are, I truly believe it is imperative in today's NBA to have either 2 superstars or 1 superstar and another elite player, along with team balance in order to win a ring.

Besides, everyone expected the Mavs/Blazers to be a tough series, and no one expected the Mavs to come out of the West. Also, they are still without arguably their 2nd best player, Caron Butler, who helped the Mavs get off to that red-hot start early in the season before his injury.

But you can pin a half-decade of embarrassing playoff losses to Jason Terry.

Management, not Terry. There was only 1 season where the Mavs were expected to win the championship, and that was 2007 when the Warriors beat them (which wasn't all that much of a surprise since the Warriors owned them that entire season). It was embarrassing, but regardless that was the only year where they were expected to make it out of the West. This season is the same story, and people are really overreacting to the Mavs struggling against a team they were EXPECTED to struggle against, especially without their 2nd best player.

Rick Carlisle has done a great job, in 2009 we barely won 50 games, our leading scorers were Dirk and Terry, nobody else was an option. We made it to the second round as a sixth seed. Carlisle isn't the issue, it's the fact that besides Dirk, we don't have ANY inside scoring, you cannot go into the playoffs and expect to win with low points in the paint numbers. One thing we MUST address this offseason is, a quality low post option, and a good solid backup PG. But this season is NOT over yet, aside from that game 4 collapse, we've played well this series, Dirk isn't doing great but our bench is stepping up. In game 5 when you see Chandler not in foul trouble, he was incredibly effective. And regarding Butler, the further we go, the more likely he returns, he is already in practice apparently, you might see him if we make it to the second round.

Carlisle isn't the problem, and I don't know know that short of Pop or Phil Jackson another coach will do better.

The problem is that you can't win a ring when your best player is also your softest. Even if you want to argue that Dirk isn't soft, perception is a lot of times more important than reality. And from Matt Barnes's quote, I'll assume that a lot of teams feel this way about Dallas so they always play like they have a shot against them and aren't going to be intimidated.
