Cleveland Browns running back Peyton Hillis has defeated Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick to earn the honor of Madden NFL 12 cover athlete. In its effort to raise awareness of the game the tournament was a huge success for EA Sports and the unlikely victor makes it an even better story.

The supporters for Hillis came from all over and were passionate in their campaign. Largely credited with his success are the strong organization of fans in social media channels and the Browns using their resources including the team’s official website. It wasn’t just Browns fans though as he got a big boost from his alma mater. Immensely strong support came from Arkansas Razorbacks fans and that, along with the other factors, were what separated him from everyone else in the tournament and led to his surprise victory.

When I looked at the bracket for the contest, I thought it was neat that every team had a player, and when Hillis beat Ray Rice in the first round, I was shocked. I never thought he would win the whole contest.

There's so much irony in all of this. As a young teen, I was always wondering when LeBron would be on the cover of NBA Live or 2k. I just thought it would be cool to see a Cleveland team represented. After he left, all I heard is how the city has no star for any teams.....how ironic that the following year, a Browns player becomes the first player from a Cleveland team to be on the cover of the most popular video game, Madden.

What's even more crazy...no one even knew who he was when we got him last offseason for Brady Quinn. Four years ago when we drafted Brady, a lot of people saw him as the future QB of our team. It's just so weird how we got Hillis and he broke out last year. There was a stretch during last season where he was unstoppable (when we beat New Orleans, New England, and almost beat New York).

I feel great for Peyton and great for the city that the fans voted for him. He's such a hard worker and very dedicated to bring his best every game. Blue-collar player which fits in Cleveland perfectly.

Heres the real question, how did people allow a place like Cleveland to out vote their team's player? Not saying Cleveland is a shit hole, but plenty of other teams have way more fans.

No way he beat Vick straight up. This is a politically correct move for EA because they don't want to deal with the potential backlash from tree huggers and those who think dogs > humans.

There's absolutely 0 chance he beat Mike Vick in fan voting unless PETA cast out a billion votes.

lol k, he's beaten more popular people than Vick along his run, including golden boy superbowl MVP Aaron Rodgers

Us people of Wisco voted against our "golden boy". We don't want him to get hurt and ruin our chance at a repeat. ;)

Vick was on the cover already? And the race excuse is such a cop out.

Also, why would EA drag Vick all the way to the finals only to play the "race" card as you say.

And explain how Hillis beat Aaron Rodgers then.

I played the race card? Reading comprehension fail.

Either way, enjoy the curse.
