Warren2ThaG
http://mopupduty.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/indiansx.jpgReport: Red Sox close to acquiring V-MartAccording to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, "The Red Sox are about to acquire" catcher-first baseman Victor Martinez from the Indians. The report has been confirmed by Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse. Martinez is owed about $2 million for the rest of this season and carries a $7 million club option for 2010. He's batting .284/.368/.464 with 15 home runs and 67 RBI in 377 at-bats for Cleveland, tallying 52 games behind the plate and another 47 at first base. The Indians have had their eye on Clay Buchholz, but it's not yet clear if he is in the deal. kingfish
People are jizzing all about this deal but I really dont think its that big a deal, VMart is a good hitter but hes not really a guy that puts you over the top, I think the Sox needed a guy like Adrian Gonzalez to really impact their lineup. Yeah they can put VMart at catcher but Varitek is so good with their pitching staff so that wont really work, they can put him at first base or DH and Martinez really isnt an elite first baseman or DH. Warren2ThaG
V-Mart is a better fit then Adrian, cheaper too. Also more versatile.

He puts you over the top. Steal considering that they kept Buchholz Anderson Bard and even Bowden.
Warren2ThaG
^ Yep. The Indians' exact return is not known, but the Red Sox did not include either right-hander Clay Buchholz nor right-hander Daniel Bard in the deal, according to a source. Steal considering that they kept Buchholz Anderson Bard and even Bowden.Vmart has 15 home runs this year in 377 at bats Hes a good catcher but not really a great player. Mike Napoli of the Angels has 15 home runs this year in 259 at bats, and Napoli's batting average is just 5 points lower them Martinez. Napoli also has a higher OPS then Martinez. People overrate VMart quite a bit, hes a good hitter but as a first basemen hes probably not even a top 20 first basemen in all of baseball. Hes not even a top 3 hitting catcher in all of baseball. Napoli, Mauer, Mcann, are all better then him. Even Posada has a better OPS, and about the same amount of home runs as VMart in about 100 less at bats. The trade might be a steal for the Sox depending on who they give up, but Martinez isnt really the guy they should be going after.
Flight
Victor has 67 RBI this year, on pace for over 100. He'll be in a better lineup, so he might push the envelope of 115 ribbies. He was a good acquisition. Another thing you don't seem to be looking at KF, is that catchers need to have games off much more often than anyone else on the field (except for a starting pitcher obviously). Catching wears on you, and now they have a very quality backup to Varitek that can play first in the meantime. Don't DH him, leave Papi there now that he's hitting again. You've now got Youk, Lowell, and Victor. Youk can play first or third, while Lowell is pretty much a third basemen. Adam LaRoche is rumored to be going somewhere in a 3-team trade for Victor from what I've heard.

fish7718
Bryan Price, Nick Hagadone, and Justin Masterson for Victor Martinez. Great deal for the Sox despite giving up 3 solid pitching prospect they kept their 3 top pitching prospects. So what do the sox do with LaRoache now?
