fish7718
The Red Sox, on the verge of acquiring catcher Victor Martinez from the Indians, are discussing another trade that would bring them first baseman Casey Kotchman from the Braves for first baseman Adam LaRoche, according to a major-league source. LaRoche, 29, played for the Braves from 2004 to '06. He hits for more power than Kotchman and traditionally hits well in the second half. The Braves' thinking is that he could ignite returning to familiar surroundings. The Red Sox's motivation in adding Kotchman is not as clear. Kotchman is an outstanding fielder, and the Red Sox's defense would improve if he were at first and Kevin Youkilis got the majority of playing time over Mike Lowell at third. Martinez, under that scenario, presumably would get most of his at-bats and catcher and DH. LaRoache headed back to ATL, funny how that worked. Cobb
Sweet. I loved LaRoche when he was in Atlanta. Edited July 31, 2009 by Papi Chulo Cobb
fish7718
They haven't reported the players trade, I doubt Kotchman that move wouldn't make much sense for the Red Sox but maybe.
Phightins
Makes sense. I had a feeling he was on his way out of Boston.
fish7718
updated looks like Kotchman was the piece from Atlanta
Phightins
If that's true, I'm not sure I understand it from Boston's end. I just assumed LaRoche was a roster dump to make room for Victor Martinez.
Warren2ThaG
Kotchman is pretty good. Nice avg around .280 and has potential to get better later on.
Phightins
Kotchman is pretty good. Nice avg around .280 and has potential to get better later on. And where do you figure he fits onto Boston's roster? Maybe another deal is coming.

However LaRoache still had the potential to become a more consistent hitter. One day he could be a .270 25 HR hitter. Besides a defensive upgrade I don't see no reason for the Sox to make this trade. Warren2ThaG
And where do you figure he fits onto Boston's roster? Maybe another deal is coming. He'll get starts from time to time vs. some starting pitchers and pinch hit.
Cobb
I would think that another deal is in place or something because the Redsox don't really need Kotchman at all.
xx.
Kotchman is the better player, small but smart move by the Red Sox.

bigdog17k
Do you think the Red Sox did this because they will be playing Martinez at 1B so they didn't wanna piss LaRoche off?
