AboveLegit
The NBA, sources said, likewise hopes to implement even lower salaries for rookies than they currently make based off the league's rookie scale The league also would like to propose new rules that make it hugely advantageous for marquee players to stay with the teams that draft them. The new rules would grant teams the ability to offer even more years and dollars to a designated "star" player than current rules allow, heeding the clamor from various small-market teams for such a measure after last summer's free-agent defections of LeBron James and Chris Bosh to Miami and the trades that sent Carmelo Anthony to New York and Deron Williams to New Jersey. An SI.com report Wednesday said that teams, under the NBA's proposal, would not be able to unilaterally "tag" a player to be their designated star, as NFL teams can by using their "franchise tag" to prevent one chosen player from becoming a free agent. Under the NBA's proposal rejected by the union last week, teams would only be able to designate one player for preferential contract treatment if the player agreed to it.http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6530352
?QuestionMark?
It's basically the same thing now. You can re-sign with your current team and get an extra year and bigger raises. The one way they can improve it is by eliminating sign and trades. Which I'm in favor of. Either take the cash or go somewhere else for less, but you can't have cake and eat it too. Check my Stats
Why don't they work on making it more difficult for big market teams to poach them. Players leave because they want to win. They need to balance the competition in the NBA. LeBron leaves Cleveland to win titles, not because of money, years, lack of loyalty, etc. It's the same with almost everyone, if Magic were in the finals this year with Dwight having legit support. there'd be no talk about him leaving. Sun Tzu
I kind of like the draft rule. I mean, it's like Kobe staying with the Lakers. I see the downsides in them, in the way that the players lack freedom to move around though.
JYD
I see the downsides in them, in the way that the players lack freedom to move around though. No they don't. They just have more of an incentive to stay put with their current club.
?QuestionMark?
Here's something I just noticed in the article that is interesting: Another key wrinkle from the rejected proposal, sources said, called for the ability for each team to shed one contract outright before next season through a one-time amnesty provision that wipes that contract off a team's books -- even though the player must still be paid -- reminiscent of a similar provision in the summer of 2005. I hope this happens. Would love to dump Luke Walton. I'm sure there are also some lux tax killers around the league teams would like to some help with.
