Lakers very interested in Adelman

The Los Angeles Lakers' search for Phil Jackson's replacement is just beginning, but NBA coaching sources on Thursday described the Lakers as "very interested" in Rick Adelman as a candidate for the position.

 

Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw has the public endorsement of Kobe Bryant and is regarded as by far the strongest in-house candidate for the position.

 

Yet sources say Lakers officials are intrigued by the Adelman option, not only because of his history of success in Portland, Sacramento and Houston but also his reputation for thriving with veteran teams and the similarities between Adelman's "corner" offense and Jackson's "triangle" offense.

 

L.A.'s decision-making chain of command when it comes to choosing Jackson's replacement is Jim Buss, Jerry Buss and general manager Mitch Kupchak, ESPN.com's J.A. Adande reported after the Lakers were swept Sunday by Dallas.

 

"In that order," one source told Adande.

The guy is the best coach on the market. Probably would have a ring or two if not for Phil Jackson always seeming to get in his way.

 

It would be interesting if they get him, on the surface it would seem that the Lakers would desperately need to find a true PG or at the very least severely cut Fish's minutes.

 

It also seems not everyone in LA's FO is sold on Shaw. I think Shaw can be a good coach, but I also can see where he can be a pushover with a veteran team like LA. It could be hard to get the respect of players you've played with/against.

Shaw only played with Kobe and Fish though. Phil was already a pushover with those two.

Also played against Gasol, Odom, Artest, Blake, and Barnes.

 

I don't know if he can command the respect of the veterans when, right or wrong, a lot of them still somewhat see him as a peer since they've played with or against him. Probably see him as just one of the guys.

 

Plus I don't know that you want to give a rookie coach the reigns to a team that's won two titles. It's like buying a brand new Bentley and giving the guys to some 16 year old who got his driver's license and you hope he doesn't crash it.

I think Shaw is going to do a good job, but Adelman would do a great job. I just hope Lakers fans won't turn on him because he used to coach the Kings.

I understand why the Lakers front office would try to target Adelman rather than Shaw. In fact I could see Adelman coaching the Lakers next season in stead of Shaw.

If you can't get a defensive master who's pretty good at offense like Thibodeau and Pop, then you have to find a coach who's very good at offense which at least will quickly build team chemistry.

 

Defensive coaches like Larry Brown, Jeff Van Gundy, and Mike Brown are all stiffs on offense and probably wouldn't be who the owners are looking for to coach the Lakers.

 

Adelman makes great sense... but I'm always a risk taker, and would like to see how Shaw goes (players like Kobe and Shaq seem to hype him up so much) or even Bill Laimbeer who I think will make a great head coach.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about our coach not being able to teach defensive skills. We'll figure that out using our assistants, assuming we keep a few around (and hopefully, Rambis comes back). Phil never coached defense. He was an offensive guy that managed egos, and was quoted as saying the best defense is a good offense (Kobe-Shaq era). He may have been joking in the grand scheme of things, but it was the truth with that dynasty.

If you guys get Adelman, the Lakers are going to struggle in the early going and I'm not sure if Adelman can regain the confidence and respect of the locker room once they do hit that wall.

 

Rick Adelman would do wonders for Pau Gasol though.
