Owner Real Deal Posted July 31, 2009 Owner Report Share Posted July 31, 2009 Since I was little, I haven't been much of a baseball fan, but I loved Ken Griffey, Jr. Can anyone give me an update on him? As in...how many more years do you think he has left, and how well he's doing right now for his age? I could read the stats, but they don't tell me everything. Sure wish he didn't get injured so early in his career. Thanks.
Flight
I'm also a Griffey fan, and living in the Northwest I see him on a nightly basis on FSN. He's about half as productive as the prime of his career with all things considered, but he's still a decent player. If he didn't get injured so much, I think he'd have the All Time HR record, or at least be approaching it and giving Barry a good scare. Plus, he did it all without steroids, I'd bet my money on it. He's on pace for something in the region of 18 homers and 55 RBI this year, but he could easily have a better second half and have more like 25 homers and 80 RBI, which is pretty productive, especially for 20+ year veteran. He's not hitting for a very good average, but his sweet swing might come around now that he's played half a season in a row consistently for the first time since 07. Last year was up and down, and with the trade he didn't always have a consistent spot to play, he does now. I think he'll pull his average up to .250, which still isn't good but it'll be better. He has more hitters around him now than he has since he last played in Seattle, and with the recent trade for Jack Wilson that's an extra runner on when he gets up. He should play a lot better with that around him. Defensively, he's lost a little speed but he's still a sure catch if it's in his range. Phightins
Now that all the steroid allegations are out, his legend is going to grow even more since evidently he played his entire career clean. I would guess that he does not have much left in the tank, but the Mariner fans could probably do a better job filling you in on that. fish7718
I think everyone is a huge Griffey fan. Great player and never heard bad rumors or anything about him. One of the most enjoyable experiences was watching him play in his prime.
Flight
Oh, Phightins reminded me about the seasons part. I'd guess he'll come back for one more after this, but it could be the end this year too. I'll say he comes back for another season and tears it up, hits 25 dingers, bats in 100, and hits a lot closer to .300 than he will this year. Might be a stretch, but it's doable if the lineup around him improves (which it will I think, the Mariners are pretty young with a few other guys that aren't going to drop off in a year). Cobb
He's also one of my favorite players. Ever since he was on the Reds I've loved watching him play. I just hope he is clean.
Legacy
I remember when I was younger and went to an A's game and he was playing. When he came up to bat, some foo like cussed him out and I got pissed and told him to shut the hell up, I don't think he saw me though. Owner Real Deal Posted August 1, 2009 Author Owner Report Share Posted August 1, 2009 That reminds me...Griffey had the prettiest swing I've ever seen in baseball. It almost looked like he wasn't even trying.

I could say the same for Bonds though, his was right behind Griffs.

Flash
IMO the most talented player of all time. Had he not gotten injured he would've been the GOAT. Yes, better than Mays and Ruth. He's the greatest player of this era IMO along with Jeter.

He's the greatest player of this era IMO along with Jeter. I agreed with you until you mentioned Derek Jeter. Derek Jeter is a great player, but not on the same level of Ken Griffey Jr. You will find people that don't like A-Rod, Albert Pujols, Barry Bonds, Manny Ramirez, and other great players, but I don't know one person that doesn't like Ken Griffey Jr. He legacy will benefit GREAAAAATTTTLLLLYYYYY because he is clean as of now, and he played in the steroid era. [expletive] injures!

CaliCurbStomppa
I grew up as very big Ken Griffey Jr fan. He was one heck of a player and he going to be one of the best when he goes into Hall of Fame. Like you guys mentioned if he wasnt so injured prone he would be the real Home Run King. Going to be sad when he retires. It seem 15 years ago was only 5 years ago.

I don't see how anyone could hate him either. The other three guys are hated because they took steroids and are just all-around douschebags. But your right noone hates Ken Griffey Jr. His game on N64 was awesome too. I never bought it, but I must've rented it about 5 times looool
Flash
I think people question Pujols more than anything. Doubt they hate him.
