Hawks looking to trade Josh Smith for starting C?

Recommended Posts

According to the AJC report, the Hawks would like to parlay Smith into the starting center they truly need, which would almost certainly mean they're having some intense discussions with the Los Angeles Clippers in the near future. After all, the Clippers have Chris Kaman angling to leave town rather than share time with DeAndre Jordan, and the Clippers have been involved in discussions about All-Star small forwards like Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James over the last year. As it happens, a Smith-for-Kaman move would work straight up, as their salaries are only $200K apart.

There are certain to be other interested parties if the Hawks do, indeed, put Smith's name out there. The Houston Rockets are in search of a star-quality small forward, and their run-and-gun style would suit Smith just fine. The San Antonio Spurs would likely have interest in Smith, as well, and have a true small forward available in Richard Jefferson. The Utah Jazz are also in the market for a three, and would happily part with Al Jefferson, who can function as a starting center.

Still, if the Hawks are dead set on a starting center, the Clippers are their best bet. To this point, the Clippers have said they're not interested in moving Kaman, but his insistence on not sharing time is likely to chance that stance. A shot at the All-Star small forward they've coveted should be more than enough to change the Clippers' minds. Don't be surprised if the Clippers and Hawks are involved in trade talks between now and the start of next season.

Josh Smith, as great an athlete as he is, is the epitome of a tweener. No post game to really play the 4, and not enough perimeter skills to play the 3. He's still a good player, but in a half-court game, which the playoffs usually become, he's not as effective as he needs to be considering his salary.

Clips could be a nice trade parter. Kaman was outplayed by Jordan, who will possibly re-sign for a lot less than Kaman is making and LAC needs a SF. Smith would fit their up-tempo offense.
