Mike Brown Next Lakers Coach?

Recommended Posts

From what I've been hearing, Kobe Bryant isn't too happy with this hiring. It's official now, that Brown is going to be the next coach, and rumors are coming out of L.A. that Kobe is very upset that they didn't decide to hire Brian Shaw. Personally, I think Brown has been given a bad rep as a coach, because in Cleveland he wasn't really allowed to coach, it was all about LeBron running the show. He's also very understanding of how to coach a team with a superstar, so I think he'll end up fitting well with Kobe also. Overall, it's a very solid hiring. He won't be a Phil Jackson, but he will be a solid coach.

And where exactly did you hear all this?

It's been reported that he supports this decision.

From what I've been reading, this seems like it is the beginning of the Jim Buss era and the dude is power hungry.

- Went with the cheap hire that is Mike Brown.

- Brian Shaw symbolized the old triangle (which it seems Buss hates) so he's gone despite having Bryant and Fisher as big supporters for him.

- He interviewed Mike Brown without Jerry Buss and Mitch Kupchak (per LA Times so who knows if its true).

- He just fired Ronnie Lester, their head of the scouting department after 23 years with the Lakers.

This is a new era of Lakers basketball. It may not be a good thing.

Ettore Messina will be on Brown's coaching staff. FWIW the Spurs were also after him a few years ago as Messina is regarded as one of the best (if not the best) coaches in Europe.

Is that confirmed or is it still up in the air?

Shaw definitely deserved this job. I never liked Brown, I thought he was a good defensive minded coach, but was too much of a players' coach that didn't do enough on offense for him to be considered a great coach.

This is really a defining moment of his coaching career.

Far too many times where he just looked completely lost out there in the playoffs. I expect it to change, he has to change his mentality if he wants to coach a Kobe led team.

This isn't as bad a hire as it's being made out to be, but all the criticisms are valid. Brown may not be able to reel in Kobe, and isn't a good offensive X's and O's guy. He does know how to get people to buy in on defense, and if he's smart, he'll have Brian Shaw teach him and continue to implement the Triangle. The Triangle wasn't Phil Jackson's offense when he ran it, and the Spurs had success with Greg Popovich giving lots of responsibility and voice to his staff.

I don't know if Brown has the chops to motivate the Lakers when they're down though, and Kobe might tune him out. I don't think he's a guy who'll take the Lakers to the next level. I think he's a Conference Finals coach, on a team whose star player is an NBA championship guy.

As for people wanting JVG to coach, I think he's having such a blast announcing he wouldn't want to get back into coaching unless teams opened up a vault for him. Keep in mind, he hasn't had a world of success either, though he clearly has the knowledge and the personality to get results.

Kupchak: decision was unanimous

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Thursday morning that Mike Brown was the unanimous choice of him, Lakers vice president of player personnel Jim Buss and Lakers owner Jerry Buss.

Kupchak said Brown impressed in his interview with his “very upbeat” nature (which was captured by colleague Mark Whicker via interviews with people who have known Brown a long time).

“Came through as a very energetic, enthusiastic person,” Kupchak said.

Kupchak noted Brown’s pedigree working under Gregg Popovich and Rick Carlisle in the past — but said Phil Jackson’s triangle offense won’t be entirely gone from the Lakers’ coaching offices.

“The triangle is gone? That’s not true,” Kupchak said. “A lot of the stuff that Mike runs is derivative of the triangle, and he’ll have a lot of stuff that is unique to him.”

A unanimous decision in favor of Brown over Adelman? Do they really like Brown that much as a coach?
