At issue are forward Linas Kleiza and guard Anthony Carter, whose free-agent possibilities in the NBA are limited at best. With Kleiza's $2.7 million qualifying contract on the books - and including Friday's trade for Milwaukee forward Malik Allen - the Nuggets would have 12 players currently on the roster at a total of $76 million. That's roughly $7 million over the luxury tax threshold. NBA teams are required to have a minimum of 13 players under contract on the roster. And that $76 million does not include the $3.2 million the team owes Antonio McDyess in the buyout of his contract last season. Kleiza has had overtures from the always-active Greek club, Olympiakos. A deal is not imminent, but it continues to be a lingering option for the Lithuanian forward, whose restricted free agent status appears to have damaged his ability to take full advantage of the market this year. Meanwhile, Carter's age (34) and reserve role hurt his ability to obtain the multiyear contract that he desired.
