reno
As an american, what language do you feel will be more important in our future to understand on a global scale, if we need to at all? trutrojan8
Well most developed countries teach English almost as a primary language, so I don't see why we'd have to change.
Dr. Feelgood
I'm quarter Chinese and I've always wanted to learn the language, so I'd probably learn Chinese even though Spanish would come in handy more.
SRV
Spanish? Spanish is useless unless you live in Miami, inside the US of course. There is no reason to go anywhere else in the US and speak Spanish to people, but if you come to Miami and you aren't staying in Miami Beach, then prepare to learn Spanish to go pick up food and stuff. As for leaving the country, a lot of other countries know English, it would be horrible if they didn't because they get a lot of American tourists. When I went to Spain I was able to speak English to a few people.

I'm sure some of the people that live in CA here can probably testify to that as well. Edited July 2, 2011 by DaBearsfan101
SRV
I am sure Miami has the worst case of this, if you go to Boston or California chances are you won't be around too many Spanish speaking people, they are everywhere in Miami. Sure they are around, but if I were to go on vacation to Los Angeles, I probably won't be communicating with people that don't understand English too much. Spanish is useful, but Chinese is probably better.

SRV
Thats a select few places, I don't really care since I know Spanish, but I personally find my ability to speak Spanish useless for many places. What good will Spanish do me in China or a bunch of states in the US. If you speak Chinese you can at least get hired at a company and travel to China for business and what not. Its easy to find someone who speaks English and Spanish, but not many Americans speak Chinese.
Multi-Billionaire
Chinese is the most spoken language in the world (in terms of number of people). But English is the more universally acceptable, even among chinese race that don't speak chinese like me, e.g. when they live in western countries, europe, or even Asia itself like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore. Better learn Chinese, then French, and then Spanish. Just don't have the time
YugoRocketsFan
Spanish, non-white hispanics are gonna take over the US anyway
Sħãlïq™
Chinese. No question about it. Latin American countires are in crisis - Argentina, Venezuela, Peru - chaos all over... it's a mess. Spanish is dying. Meanwhile China is growing up every day. Bottom line: Importance of Chinese >>>>> Spanish. Edited July 6, 2011 by Shalïq
