Is a true PF the answer for the Atlanta Hawks?

We've seen Josh Smith playing the four game after game, and while the Hawks have a lot of talent from the 1-5, they just don't get the job done.

How would they fare with a true PF (let's say a post PF) drawing attention near the rim? Smith is a hell of a defender at the four, but what he doesn't provide is a consistent and dangerous post game down low. Is this where the Hawks need to look?

They already have a true PF and his name is Horford.

All they need is a true C and so Horford can slide to PF.

Never been a fan of Smith's game... he's too slow to be a SF... and he doesn't really have post game to be a true PF. I don't think his team can contend if he's the 2nd guy. He has to accept a Jason Terry role... he'd bring great energy and contribution off the bench.

Agreed, Horford isn't a center.

They need to deal Smith.

He's one of those overrated players like prime Shawn Marion and Rajon Rondo. They're great fantasy players that fill up the box score, but they're just glorified role players.

At least Marion and Rondo are legit pieces to the puzzle. Smith on the other hand is a square peg trying to fit in a round hole. He's too much of a tweener to help Atlanta win, unless he's coming off the bench but at his salary that's not happening. They need to trade him and get either a real Center or a PF that can draw double teams. Every championship team has a player they can dump the ball into the post who can get an easy two points or will draw a double to get someone else an open look.

Titles are won in half court games, and Smith isn't effective when the tempo slows down.

The answer for the Hawks is a true franchise player, regardless of position. Although a center would be ideal so you could move Horford to the 4, I think you can definitely win a championship with Horford as your starting center considering how the vast majority of the players who play the 5 spot are really just power forwards thrust into that role anyways. How many true, impactful centers are there really left in the game? 4 or 5?

Right now they basically have every player on the roster one spot too high in the pecking order. Johnson is a 2nd option forced into being a 1st option, Horford is a 3rd option forced into being a 2nd option, Smith is a 4th option forced into a 3rd option, etc... The only player on this team who really has the role that he should have is Jamal Crawford and that is obviously as an offensive sixth man.

This team has almost all of the right pieces to become a legitimate contender, but the problem is that they are missing that one big piece and, as a result, everybody is forced into options one spot higher than they should be.
