First Pick

Alright, if you had the 1st over-all pick in an MLB draft, with every play in the league eligible, who do you choose with the first pick?

I know age makes a difference, but I'm not going to pay too much attention to it.

Alright, I think I would choose Joe Mauer or Hanley Ramirez for a few reasons.

1. You don't find cathers that can hit as well as Joe Mauer, and that is a HUUGGGGGEEEEEEE benefit for a team considering good hitting catchers are pretty rare.

2. I may take Hanley Ramirez because he is an incredible all-around talent, and I don't care too much about his fielding.

With him playing SS, it would make me consider taking him more than some other great players because great SS are pretty much non-existent right now, and no, Jose Reyes, Jimmy Rollins, and Miquel Tejada are not on his level if some of you were going to try and argue that.

Now, the reason I wouldn't choose Albert Pujols, although he is the best player in the MLB is mainly becuase of the incredible depth that his position.

Just off the top of my head I can think of Kevin Youkilis, Mark Texeria, Adrian Gonzolez, Justin Morneau, Ryan Howard, Miguel Cabrera, Paul Konerko, Carlos Pena([expletive]ty batting average right now), and Prince Fielder.

All of those players are going to put up very good numbers, and the depth at that position is the reason that I would pass on taking the best player in the MLB.

I will never take a great pitcher over a great hitter.

I'll take the player that is on the field almost every day of the season.

You could have the player that gets 4 or 5 outs in every game, or you could have the player who makes 21 or 24 outs every 5th game.

You'd have to be stupid to pick someone that's going to make 4 or 5 outs per game. If you get the first pick, why not take somebody good that drives in/scores a run almost every game?

I'd take Hanley. Like you said, no reason to pick a 1B with the #1 pick no matter how good he is.

If this were a multi round draft, I would take two great pitchers in the 1st and 2nd rounds. If you build around pitching and defense, even if you have a so-so offense you can still win. If I got to build a stadium to fit my team, I would build an AT&T Park, Citi Field, Safeco Field, Comerica Park, Nationals Park, or another big stadium.

But if I only got to make that first pick, and the idea wasn't necessarily to build an immediate World Series contender, but to take the best "franchise player", I would take Hanley Ramirez without thinking twice about it.

Once Jose Reyes comes to his full 20/60 potential he will be better than Hanley. Especially because Reyes's defense is years ahead of Hanleys.

Sorry, I refuse to handicap my team defensively with my first pick. I would go Albert Pujols. Best hitter in the game and one of the best defenders at his position, and he's only 4 years older than Hanley. I definitely would not take a catcher. A guy who is has the highest risk of being injured out of anyone on the team, no way I'd take that risk.

Hanley Ramirez is the clear cut best SS in the MLB.

He hits for a better average, has a better OBP, and has more power than Jose Reyes.

Jose Reyes has better fielding and better base stealing abilities, but I'm taking the guy that hits for a much better average, gets on base more, and has more power.

Did i not just say wait till Jose Reyes comes to his potential?

I can say wait until Hanley Ramirez comes to his potential, and he's younger than Jose Reyes.

Age doesn't really factor into what I mean. Hanley Ramirez has hit a ceiling IMO, Reyes has so much more room to improve.

He hasn't hit his ceiling, and his ceiling is a level above Jose Reyes.

I know you love Jose Reyes, but he's not as good as Hanley Ramirez.

When people talk about over-rated player, Jose Reyes is a name that is always brought up.

It's actually Josh Beckett, but what would you know.

LOL @ Hanley hitting his ceiling.

Hanley is the best hitting shortstop to come into the league since A-Rod played the position. When he does hit that peak, he'll be a triple crown candidate putting up 40/40 seasons.

I'd take Hanley over Pujols but Pujols gives you the bat but a great glove as well.

He has the ability to steal more bases, so that is something I am looking forward to seeing him do.

Why did he have to be dumb and sign that contract extension with the Florida Marlins when he could have come back to the Boston Red Sox and gotten a ton of money?!??!!?!?!?

I think it worked out well for both sides. Boston got a ring and the Marlins found their new franchise player.

If Hanley leaves anywhere I think(hope) it'll be to replace Jeter in NY.

It has worked out well for the Boston Red Sox, even though I have been very critical of Josh Beckett at times.

It's very frustrating when you had Julio Lugo making 9.5mil and sucking, have Nick Green who did alright, but not really good at all, and sucks at fielding, and now have Jed Lowrie starting, and he is batting under .200.

And, they could have Hanley Ramirez in the middle of the current line-up tearing it up, but then again, there would be no Mike Lowell and Josh Beckett, so I am happy with the trade.
