2011 Ohio State Buckeyes Season Preview Part 1

The Offseason – What Happened and What's To Come

 

The last time the Ohio State Buckeyes won a football game was on a Friday, January 1st of 2010 to be exact. Every win from the 2011 season was vacated as a result of a self-imposed punishment by Ohio State.

 

Not only has the projected starting quarterback, Terrelle Pryor, left the university. After coaching from 2001 to 2011, Jim Tressel will no longer be on the sidelines. Following the high hopes coming into the 2010 season, Ohio State finished 10-2 and was invited to the Sugar Bowl where it beat favored Arkansas.

 

However, after the suspension of the five players, which included Pryor, for selling memorabilia, just before the bowl game, the investigations and allegations surrounding the story grew, and more unfortunate news was released weekly.

 

Highlights of Tressel’s coaching tenure at OSU included winning the 2002 National Championship, going undefeated against Michigan, and going 5-4 in bowl games (excluding the now vacated Sugar Bowl victory).

 

With more sanctions expected, the immediate and long-term future of Ohio State football looks dim. In for Tressel is Luke Fickell, former player and coach for the Buckeyes. In his first press conference as head coach, Fickell emphasized, "The 2011 Buckeyes will not be compared or contrasted to previous years. It will be about respect, toughness and being men of action." Fickell also announced that the other four players involved in Tressel's suspension will serve such punishment at the beginning of the upcoming season.

Fickell hopes to clean up the lasting images and moments from the offseason.

 

Another change involved adding Mike Vrabel to the staff as a linebacker’s coach. The former Buckeye and 3-time Super Bowl champion hopes to teach some of his veteran experience to the team.

 

The roster has also been affected by the fall out from the investigations. Many incoming freshman have decided against going to Ohio State due to the possibility of a bowl ban. This will hurt Fickell's first few years as a recruiter.

 

Possible punishments include bans from bowl games, bans from Big Ten Championship games, and removal of scholarships. Now that it seems all information has been released and Jim Tressel has been removed, the Buckeyes hope the sanctions will not be as severe.

 

One thing remains true about Ohio State football, and the university as a whole: the tradition and the fans will stand by its side through the tough times.

 

A new era of football is en route. As the program awaits more news from the NCAA, one can only wander what is to come.

With Terrelle Pryor's exit, Senior Joe Bauserman looks to capitalize on the opportunity at the Quarterback position. He was 2nd to Pryor in attempts last year, going 16-22. Highly touted freshman recruit Braxton Miller is the favorite to start the season. Ranked first overall in the state of Ohio, he is multidimensional at the position. (His 40 time was 4.5) Sophomore Kenny Guiton could get more chances this year, and his role will likely expand after this season.

Ohio native Braxton Miller may be the starter for the 2011 Ohio State Buckeyes.

 

Due to the five game suspension, Daniel "Boom" Herron's half back position will be up for grabs. Sophomore Jaamal Berry will most likely start to open the season. He has the highest average yardage per carry among returning backs (8.3). Junior Jordan Hall and sophomore Carlos Hyde will back up Berry. When Herron returns, he'll join Berry to give the Bucks a dynamic half back duo.

How much will the loss "Boom" Herron for the first five games affect the Buckeyes?

 

The Buckeye receivers will have to step up collectively. With DeVier Posey's five game suspension and the exit of Dane Sanzenbacher, the most experienced wide receiver on the Buckeyes for the first game will be sophomore Corey Brown, who had a total of 8 receptions last season. The Tight End position will have a bigger emphasis on offense due to the gaps at the wide outs. Juniors Jake Stoneburner and Reid Fragel will have a much more expanded role in the Buckeyes offensive game. Stoneburner had 222 receiving yards last season along with two touchdowns. Posey is the Buckeyes best deep threat for the Buckeyes, coming off a 7 touchdown, 848 yard season. Ohio State will miss his playmaking ability at the start of the season.

Stoneburner could have a breakout season in 2011.

 

The offensive line for the Ohio State will be very experienced. With three seniors in Center Michael Brewster, J.B. Shugarts, and Mike Adams (who will be suspended the first five games), the young core of OSU's offense will have an easier time during each possession.

Cameron Heyward's absence will hurt OSU's pass rush and run rush heavily. Returning starters Nathan Williams (Sr.) and John Simon (Jr.) are expected to lead the defensive line. Williams lead the team with 4.5 sacks last season. Senior Solomon Thomas will probably start once his five game suspension is up. Junior Jonathan Newsome will start at the other defensive end.

Nathan Williams will be the leader of the Buckeyes defensive unit.

 

The linebacking crew will receive the biggest overhaul with Ross Homan and Brian Rolle both graduating. 5-star recruit Curtis Grant will most likely start at the middle linebacker position. Senior Andrew Sweat will start as one of the outside linebackers. He had 41 tackles last year along with an interception. Senior Tyler Moeller and Junior Storm Klein will trade off on the other side. They had 20 and 18 tackles respectively last season.

 

The Buckeyes have a lot of new talent entering the defensive backfield. Despite losing 3 of it's 4 starters last year, they have a lot of youngsters ready to get on the field. Junior DB Orhian Johnson had an interception and 50 tackles last year. DBs Nate Ebner (Jr.) and Christian Bryant (So.) had limited playing time last year and have high expectations this season. Safety Nate Oliver (Sr.) will start with the exit of Jermale Hines. Cornerback Corey Brown (So.) could start also.

Special Teams

 

Kicker Drew Basil is back for his sophomore year as kicker. Jordan Hall will lead the return game. He accounted for 24 of the 30 punt returns and 18 of the 40 kick returns last year. Junior Ben Buchanan returns as starting punter. He had 15 punts inside the 20 and had a net yardage of 41.0 on his kicks.

Leaders

1. Ohio State

'10 Record: 12-1

Jim Tressel and Terrelle Pryor are out, and Luke Fickell and Braxton Miller are in. Still a powerhouse, Ohio State has a long way to go to regain it’s integrity. Awaiting the NCAA punishment, the Buckeyes have a tough few years ahead in the recruiting ranks. This season, look for Jaamal Berry to have a breakout season.

2. Wisonsin

'10 Record: 11-2

They might not score 83 points in a game this season, but the offense will still be highly effective. Running backs James White and Montee Ball will carry a bigger load with Sophomore Jon Budmayr taking Scott Tolzien’s place at QB. Despite the 11 win season, the Badgers have something to prove after losing in the Rose Bowl.

RB James White had 14 TDs last year along with 1,052 rushing yards.

3. Penn State

'10 Record: 7-6

Joe Paterno hopes to bounce back from a let down of last season. QB Matt McGloin is going to have to step up with Evan Royster’s absence. The defense is full of experience and should definitely improve after allowing 23.7 points per game last season.

Receiver Derek Moye will be the number one target for QB Matt McGloin.

4. Illinois

'10 Record: 7-6

The Illini were competitive in most of its losses last season. This year will be huge for Head Coach Ron Zook given the ups and downs during his tenure. With 5 home games to start the season, Illinois has a chance to get off to a good start and gain momentum early on.

RB Jason Ford needs to contribute in order for Illinois to be balanced on offense.

5. Purdue

'10 Record: 4-8

The offense didn’t put up good numbers last season due to injuries and QB changes. The QB situation could be shaky this season again. Despite losing DE Ryan Kerrigan, the defense is returning multiple starters. The success of RB Ralph Bolden could determine how well Danny Hope’s 3rd year at Purdue turns out.

DT Kawann Short (6 sacks last season) will have to lead the defensive line without Ryan Kerrigan.

6. Indiana

'10 Record: 5-7

Kevin Wilson will begin his first year as the Hoosiers Head Coach, and has to find a starting QB with Ben Chappell gone. A pretty tough non-conference schedule, which includes home games against South Carolina State and Virginia, and a road game at Ball State, will get this team battle tested for the Big Ten games.

WR Damarlo Belcher had 4 TDs on 78 catches last season.

'10 Record: 10-4

A solid end to its Big 12 season leaves the Cornhuskers in prime position to take the Big Ten conference by storm. The offense lead by scrambler QB Taylor Martinez and the star-studded defense lead by CB Alfonzo Dennard give this team a great chance at winning the division. A tough start to its Big Ten season, playing at Wisconsin and hosting Ohio State, will present a challenge early on to the Cornhuskers.

Taylor Martinez can run, but he must improve his passing if Nebraska wants to make noise in its Big Ten premiere season.

2. Michigan State

'10 Record: 11-2

Last season, the Spartans took college football by surprise after a stunning start. The only two losses were embarrassments against Iowa and Alabama. QB Kirk Cousins and WR B.J. Cunningham return for their senior years to lead the Spartan offense.

Kirk Cousins threw for 20 TDs on 2,825 passing yards last season.

3. Iowa

'10 Record: 8-5

Besides the victory over Mizzou in the Insight Bowl, Iowa lost quite a few big games during the regular season. Although the Hawkeyes star WR Derrell Johnson-Koulianos is gone, Marvin McNutt is in store for a big season. QB James Vandenberg, who has little experience, will step in to replace Ricky Stanzi. If Iowa can take care of its relatively fair home schedule, it could be competitive in the division. But the Hawkeyes can also take a turn for the worse if they fall back in the pack early on.

Last year, Marvin McNutt had 8 TDs from his 53 receptions.

4. Northwestern

'10 Record: 7-6

Despite it's bad ending to the 2010 season, losing against Texas Tech in the Ticket City Bowl, the Wildcats did manage to make it to their 3rd straight bowl game. The team is full of experience and depth, so it could be a surprise in the conference. QB Dan Persa should improve on a solid 2010 campaign. Head Coach Pat Fitzgerald has the team going in the right direction.

5. Michigan

'10 Record: 7-6

The Wolverines will boast an offense to be reckoned with many playmakers returning. QB Denard Robinson is in the Heisman conversation, and he’ll have WRs Junior Hemingway, Roy Roundtree, and Darryl Stonum to throw too. On the other side, the defense, which finished 110th in the nation in total defense, has a lot of work to do in order to make Brady Hoke’s first year a success.

If Denard Robinson can avoid injuries and improve his passing, expect a huge improvement from the Wolverines.

6. Minnesota

'10 Record: 3-9

New Head Coach Jerry Kill has a lot of rebuilding at hand. The defense which allowed 33 points a game last season hurt the Gophers. A very tough Big Ten home schedule, which includes games against Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Illinois, will make it very hard for the Gophers.

5 Key In-Conference Games:

 

1. Ohio State @ Nebraska (Oct. 8) -- The favorites of each division meet in Nebraska as Memorial Stadium hosts its first Big Ten Conference game. It will be interesting to see how Taylor Martinez deals with the Buckeye defense. Also, Ohio State's four suspended players will return.

 

2. Nebraska @ Wisonsin (Oct. 1) -- Nebraska plays its first Big Ten game, and a highly underrated Badger team looks to prove that it can contend for a championship. Each team has something to prove, and only one will come out with a win.

 

3. Michigan State @ Ohio State (Oct. 1) -- Ohio State will be without playmakers Daniel Herron and DeVier Posey along with the other two players suspended. This will also be Head Coach Luke Fickell's first conference game as Head Coach. With so much uncertainty for the Buckeyes, this is the perfect chance for the Spartans to take a huge jump in the conference and start its Big 10 season off with a huge road win.

 

4. Penn State @ Wisconsin (Nov. 26) -- This season finale could determine who wins the Leaders Division and advances to the first Big Ten Championship game.

 

5. Michigan State @ Iowa (Nov. 12) -- After getting torched at Spartan Stadium by the Hawkeyes by a score of 37-6, which ruined the Spartans chances of winning the Big Ten outright, Michigan State has a chance to redeem itself in a hostile Iowa stadium where bowl implications will certainly be at stake.

Nebraska will host a huge game against Ohio State in 2011.

 

3 Key Out of Conference Big Ten Games:

 

1. Penn State vs. Alabama (Sept. 10) -- The Nittany Lions were almost shut out by the Crimson Tide, 24-3, last season. Penn State needs to stay at least competitive in this home game, not only to help it's chances in the BCS, but to help the Big Ten reputation.

 

2. Ohio State @ Miami (Fla.) (Sept. 17) -- The Buckeyes beat the Hurricanes last season, but a loss here would be catastrophic to the Buckeyes season regardless of the bowl ban.

 

3. Iowa vs. Pittsburgh (Sept. 17) -- This will be a good barometer for the Hawkeyes' season, and it is against one of the best teams in a weak Big East conference. It is also Iowa's only major challenge before the Big Ten season begins.

Led by Jaamal Berry's 214 rushing yards, the Buckeyes beat the Rockets and moved to 2-0.

 

1st Quarter

 

The second game of the season pitted the Buckeyes against a much better MAC team in Toledo. Toledo came into the game 1-0. OSU was heavily favored, and started out with a big. Minutes in, QB Braxton Miller threw to WR Devin Smith, who unexpectedly managed to find a hole and break out for a touchdown. OSU 7, Toledo 0 Toledo, however, moved quickly down the field. Unable to score a touchdown, Kicker B. Claus came in for the 27 yard field goal. OSU 7, Toledo 3. OSU's offense was stopped very quickly, and Toledo had the ball as the 1st quarter was about to end. Suddenly, Rockets WR Kenny Stafford got open and was able to get a 67 yard reception for a TD. This gave the Rockets the lead going into the 2nd quarter. Toledo 10, OSU 7

2nd Quarter

 

OSU put together a great drive to respond to the Rockets, capping it off with a 45 yard reception from Corey Brown. OSU 14, Toledo 10 However, the Toledo got great yardage on the following kickoff return, and managed to get a touchdown the first play out of the huddle. Kenny Stafford was the target again, this time for 45 yards. OSU was shocked, and the defensive backfield had been exposed for the second time already. Toledo 17, OSU 14 With 4 minutes left in the half, Coach Luke Fickell was determined to have his team up at the half. Jaamal Berry, who had a few decent runs, exploded for a 62 yard run which included a spin move that caused a Toledo defender to dive to the sidelines. OSU 21, Toledo 17 OSU managed to hold Toledo's defense down, managing to keep the lead at the half.

 

3rd Quarter

 

Just when OSU's defense seem to be back on track, it's backfield was taken apart on a 65 yard reception taken for a TD by Morgan Williams which put Toledo right back on top. Toledo 24, OSU 21 After changing possessions, it looked like the offensive shoot out was over. With 4 minutes left in the quarter, however, Braxton Miller found a hole and threw a pass to TE Jake Stoneburner. Stoneburner, not the fastest, managed to bruise his way past a few defenders and ran 87 yards for the TD to put OSU ahead again. OSU 28, Toledo 24 Toledo finally got in the red zone a few possession changes later, and its run game finally showed some life when A. Thomas rammed through the Buckeye defense to give Toledo the lead with 1 minute left in the quarter. Toledo 31, OSU 28

 

4th Quarter

 

OSU Defensive Coordinator Jim Heacock was fatigued from yelling at the Buckeye defense all night. He made sure they came out with intensity for the 4th quarter. Jaamal Berry continued dominating Toledo, with a 31 yard rushing touchdown with 4:50 left in the game. OSU 35, Toledo 31 The Buckeyes defense was fired up and Toledo had a three and out. OSU's offense couldn't take enough time off the clock though, giving Toledo the ball with a little over 3 minutes left. In a 3rd down situation, Terrance Owens threw to what seemed like a an open receiver. However, LB Storm Klein intercepted the pass and returned it for a 40 yard touchdown, which basically decided the game. OSU 42, Toledo 31 By then, the game was out of reach, but the Buckeyes ended up with easy field position and decided to let Jaamal Berry continue his excellent game and put an exclamation mark on the game with a one yard rushing touchdown, giving the Buckeyes the lead. Final: OSU 49, Toledo 31.

Player of the Game: Jaamal Berry was the reason OSU responded the way it did. Braxton Miller went 10-21, so the run game needed to provide that consistency, and Berry came through with the biggest game of his career with 214 yards and 3 TDs. He averaged 9.3 yards a carry.

Game of the Week

 

Arizona was down 22-10 going into the fourth quarter, but shut out the Cowboys 17-0 in the final quarter to pull off the road upset 27-22. Arizona QB Nick Foles went an ugly 13-36, but was backed by three running backs who rushed for almost 150 yards combined. Arizona CB Shaquille Richardson had a key forced fumble which made him deserving of POTW.
