It's a perfectly reasonable thought in the short term, after all. But look deeper, Griz fans. There's a potentially more comforting conclusion: The gyrations that many believe have to occur in order for the owners and players to agree are only likely to help fortify the long-term future of the team in Memphis, experts say. "The big winners are likely to be the small markets like Memphis, Milwaukee, San Antonio, who are looking to have a better chance to be profitable and compete," said Tom Penn, an ESPN analyst on the business of the NBA and an assistant general manager with the Griz from 2000-07. "You will see an improved financial position for the small-market teams. The only question will be, 'What will that look like? What will that be?'" Indeed, that seems to be the largest unknown. Will the new system drastically help the Griz? Will it marginally assist its bottom line? It's the suspense that will make the labor impasse as interesting in Memphis as perhaps any of the NBA's 28 markets. Certain sanctions could prevent them from re-signing Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph, which will hurt the team enough, in the present, to bring about more relocation rumors. Gasol yeah, but they already re-signed Randolph last season. Nice that HoopsHype can't keep their salaries updated.
