Trade Deadline 2011

Hot stove discussion in here! The trade deadline is less than 2 weeks away.

I will start with some news that I (potentially) love and Fish will hate:

The Phillies and Red Sox are among the most aggressive suitors for Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran — if not the most aggressive, according to major-league sources

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Philadelphia-Phillies-Boston-Red-Sox-most-aggressive-in-pursuit-of-new-York-Mets-Carlos-Beltran-071911

I would love Beltran in Philly, to be totally honest. Of all the big names rumored to be on the trade block, he's the only one that I think would provide a huge upgrade and that I am willing to pay up for. The Mets are apparently willing to pay his entire salary in exchange for good prospects. I'd prefer to pay the entire salary and keep the prospects, but I am guessing the Mets would want a ton from the Phillies. As they should.

The Indians have to make a move...if we don't make a move and end up not making the playoffs, ownership will be torched.

Yeah we need an outfield in the worst way now with Grady and Choo both out. Having to have a second-basemen play LF tonight because of all our injuries in the OF cost us a game tonight. Even thought Perez should have not been in that mess to begin with.

Jon Heyman proves yet again that he is the dumbest national baseball reporter out there (re: Beltran):

Phillies: Look like the clear favorite at the moment. Arguably baseball's best team needs to balance its lineup. Very capable of surprises (they are also connected to Rockies star Ubaldo Jimenez even though they have baseball's rotation top). Their resistance to exceeding baseball's $170 million luxury tax threshold could be allayed by the Mets paying Beltran's salary. Even if they won't surrender Brown, "they have arms,'' one scout said. But Brown would fit in rightfield as Beltran's replacement in New York.

Hello Jon...The Phillies wouldn't trade Brown for Roy Halladay, even with a contract extension for Doc basically guaranteed. They are not trading him for a 3-month rental of a non-elite outfielder (or a 3 month rental of any player, for that matter).

With that said...if the Phillies DO wind up trading Dom Brown for 3 months of Carlos Beltran, I will put some serious thought into finding a new team to support.

But anyway, I would love to get Beltran. I believe he may be the "final piece" to this puzzle. I am even willing to say that I'd make all prospects not named Jarred Cosart fair game.

If we got Brown for Beltran, not only would I pay this years salary, I'd pay next years salary too if you could resign him

Well, that isn't happening. If a different writer suggested it, then I'd start getting scared. But Heyman is a hack. Proves it yet again with this.

Astros looking to sell high on Pence apparently.

ESPN’s Buster Olney reported, through Twitter, that the Astros have shown a willingness to trade Pence and that rival executives expect it to happen. One team with the prospects to make a deal happen, Olney speculated, is Atlanta.

Wade wouldn’t confirm or deny any potential scenarios. He laid out the team’s approach to the trading season this way: “We’re open-minded to listen on anything. At the end of the day, we can always say no. I just think it’s important for us to not foreclose any possibilities or opportunities to get better, for now or the long term. It’s not inconsistent with the position we’ve taken in the last couple of years.”

The Giants, Phillies and Braves appear to be the leaders in the Beltran sweepstakes, according to @SI_JonHeyman. Brewers also involved.

I am now kind of on the Hunter Pence bandwagon. As long as Brown and Cosart are not part of the deal (I see no way Brown is, but Cosart possibly could be). If the Phillies are going to trade a big prospect(s), I'd prefer not to trade them in the division (Mets-Beltran). Similarly, it would be nice to have a corner outfielder under contract for next season when Ibanez is gone.

Getting Pence would put the Phillies over the luxury tax threshold though, which makes me think they won't go for it.

First "legitimate" trade of deadline season?

Nats get Jonny Gomes.

And the most interesting part of this trade...

The Reds call up Yonder Alonso.

K-rod for PTBNL not legit?

Oh right. Forgot about that.

Also...

Brian McCann is injured and Carlos Beltran is going to the Giants (probably). Here's to hoping the Braves massively overpay for a bat out of desperation...

And the Mets are definitely getting Zack Wheeler for Beltran. Congrats Fish, definitely the best offer the Mets could have gotten for 3 months of Beltran. Of course, the Mets have to eat a significant chunk of the remaining money.

Now I am super excited the Phillies didn't try to match.

Yessir :) don't know much about Wheeler, impressive k/9 unimpressive bb/9, he's young looks like if he ever gets control will be dirty.

35 on midseason top prospect list, higher than Jared Cosart.

The only way I could be happier is if Beltran resigned with us next year.

BTW kudos to the Mets, actually paying a lot in this deal probably. It would have been easy for them just to go dump his salary but instead they sollowed the bullet on this one for the sake of the franchise. Now let's resign Jose Reyes.

Pretty stoked about the Jays getting Rasmus without giving up any real major pieces. Stewart is a nice prospect but he was hardly a sure thing to be a future starter for the Jays and they have nice pitching depth in the minors anyways, so they may have just given up a handful of relievers for a 24 year old starting center fielder who they now have under control until, I believe, 2014.

Of course there are still the future considerations to think about, but as the deal stands right now I absolutely love it. The only guy I'll miss is Jason Frasor as I've always liked him. At least he managed to set the franchise record for appearances earlier in the season.

I'm very excited to see a lineup of

C: D'Arnaud/Arencibia

1B: Lind

2B: Hill (although I hope he is long gone and is replaced by somebody who doesn't completely suck)

3B: Lawrie

SS: Escobar

LF: Snider

CF: Rasmus

RF: Bautista

DH: Thames/Encarnacion (if he continues to swing the bat like he has over the past month)

On top of this they also have guys like Gose and Hechavarria who are intriguing prospects as well.

Of course none of this really means anything unless the league makes changes to their playoff format because the no matter what the Jays do, they are still in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox, which makes the chances of making the playoffs slim.

Eh saying Hill completely sucks isn't really fair to me. Sure he's not hitting like Aaron Hill of 2 years ago but he's still an excellent defender at his position, Obviously .274 OBP isn't going to cut it but really Hill isn't much worse than a below average 2B to me. You look around the league sure you got your Utleys and Canos but for everyone of them you got your Getzs and your Casillas or guys who are just as inept offensively but don't field their position half as good as Hill does. If I were the Blue Jays I'd let Hill stay at 2B and try to develop one through the farm system, which appears they are trying to do to me.
