Mike Woodson Interviewing for Knicks Defensive Assistaint

Recommended Posts

Fairly old news as it was originally reported at the beginning of the month, so if any Knick fans have heard anything more recent, I apologize for posting this.

Anyways...

The Knicks Fix

According to @daldridgetnt, former Knick (80-81) Mike Woodson is interviewing for D'Antoni's Defensive Coordinator assistant position.

Woodson absolutely sucks at anything related to the offensive end of the floor, as we all saw during his time in Atlanta where the only offense he ever ran was isolating Joe Johnson or Jamal Crawford, but he certainly had that team playing very good defense especially considering he had guys like Mike Bibby and Jamal Crawford, who are anything but defensive specialists, playing major roles.

With him focusing entirely on defensive principles and sets and D'Antoni managing the offense, I think it could work. Obviously there will be an adjustment process (assuming he is hired) and a D'Antoni led team will likely never be anything special defensively considering the liberties that they take in order to create offense, but I do think it could work.

Of course, I can also see this pairing failing miserably as well. It is about 50/50 for me.

It sounds like the Knicks are close to hiring Woodson and it might be official sometime next week.

The Knicks are moving closer to hiring former Hawks head coach Mike Woodson as an assistant coach, which will fuel speculation that Woodson may one day succeed Mike D'Antoni as the team's head coach.

Although Woodson's last Atlanta team was criticized for its failure to make defensive adjustments when getting bombed by Orlando in the 2010 playoffs, the former first-round pick of the Knicks will join D'Antoni's staff as a defensive coach.

The Daily News first reported in May that D'Antoni, who has resisted bringing in an outsider to his coaching staff, would be forced to hire a defensive coach because of the Knicks' failures at that end during his first three seasons in New York.

In the past few days, Woodson had told two confidantes that he expects to join the Knicks. The move might become official next week, according to sources, when Garden and team executives return from vacation. Woodson had what he called a good meeting with D'Antoni earlier this month, but he had people above D'Antoni in his corner from the start.
