Raptors All-Time Playoff Simulation

Recommended Posts

So there is nothing going on anywhere which makes it difficult to get any posts in the Raptors forum (the Ultimate Raptor Rankings are pretty much the only source of consistent Raptor related stuff) and since there have been 16 year of Raptors ball I figured I would use the What If Sports simulator and run a Raptors playoff.

The bracket will be the same as your typical playoffs with 2 conferences (red and purple conference to represent their team colors and because, well, I'm completely uncreative) with 8 teams in each. Each series will be a best of 7series. I will rank the teams based on their regular season records and will sim 1 game for each series every day that I am online until there is a winner. In the event of a regular season record tie, I will use my judgement on which team I believe is worthy of the higher ranking.

The bracket is as followed:

Purple Conference

#1 2000-2001 Raptors

vs

#8 1997-1998 Raptors

2000-2001 lead series 3-0

#2 2001-2002 Raptors

vs

#7 2002-2003 Raptors

2001-2002 lead series 3-0

#3 2007-2008 Raptors

vs

#6 2005-2006 Raptors

2007-2008 lead series 3-0

#4 2003-2004 Raptors

vs

#5 2008-2009 Raptors

2003-2004 lead series 2-1

Red Conference

#1 2006-2007 Raptors

vs

#8 1995-1996 Raptors

Series tied 1-1

#2 1999-2000 Raptors

vs

#7 2010-2011 Raptors

1999-2000 lead series 2-0

#3 2009-2010 Raptors

vs

#6 1996-1997 Raptors

Series tied 1-1

#4 1998-1999 Raptors

vs

#5 2004-2005 Raptors

1998-1999 leads series 2-0

In the event that roster moves happened midway through the season, such as in 2008-2009 when Jermaine O'Neal was traded midway through the season for Shawn Marion, I will use the lineup that got the most playing time, so O'Neal would be factor into that lineup instead of Marion.

I'll get started simming games tomorrow.

This would actually be cool if it was done for every team, but for about a third of the teams in the league, it would be FAR too much work.

I agree.

If you could get, say, 1 or 2 people for each team it wouldn't be too bad, but even then it would be a lot of work. If this ends up being a relative success, I will likely end up doing one for another team in the Atlantic Division depending on which team the majority wants.

The Raptors just amde perfect sense considering they have played 16 seasons and it just made sense. I've actually considered doing this a while ago but never got around to it.

Purple Conference

Love how you included purple even thought the Raps washed it out of their team colors (Epic fail, IMHO <_< ). I still miss those sick purple unis. Anyhow, I can do a similar thread for the Clippers but uhm... what's the point? I don't get it... :(

Umm, no duh.

I had purple and red because they were the two predominant colors in the Raptors 16 year history. I thought that was pretty obvious. How is it an "epic fail"?

The point is that there is absolutely nothing going on in the NBA right now so I figured I'd do something to get some posts in the forum.

What I called an 'epic fail's the Raptors decison to reduce team colors from red-purple-black-white to red-black-white. <_<

Thank God, there are people like you who still consider purple on of the franchise's predominant colors! *props*

Ahh, gotcha.

It may not be a popular opinion, but I actually really liked the Raptors purple uniforms and I liked their home with the purple trim more than I like their home with the red trim.

They tried too hard to market the Raptors as Canada's team with the change from purple to red and putting the Maple Leaf on the jerseys.

As for the original purpose of this thread, I'll like sim games later today when I am watching the Canada-Brazli game.

Vince Carter led the 2001-2002 Raptors with 29 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists while Keon Clark chipped in with 18 points and 14 rebounds. The difference in this game was the 2nd quarter where the 2001-2002 Raptors outscored their opponent by 9 points as the other three quarters were played to a draw.

Morris Peterson had 23 points and 6 rebounds in the loss.

Vince Carter was named Player of the Game.

vs

#5 2008-2009 Raptors

Results: 2003-2004 defeat 2008-2009 103-101

In an expected close game that came down to the wire, the 2003-2004 Raptors depth proved to be the deciding factor. Vince Carter led a balanced offensive attack with 22 points and 8 assists. Morris Peterson had 21 points in 22 minutes, Jalen Rose had 20 points and Donyell had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

For the 2003-2004 team, Jose Calderon led the way with 20 points and 15 assists while Chris Bosh chipped in with 22 points and 9 rebounds.

Chris Bosh hit a fadeaway jumper over two defenders off of a nice pass from Calderon with 5 seconds left in the game to tie it at 101-101. The 2003-2004 Raptors called a timeout and inbounded the ball at the top of the circle to Vince Carter. He drove by Anthony Parker and was fouled by Jermaine O'Neal with 1 second left on the clock. He hit both free throws and Calderon's 3 quarter court heave at the buzzer was no good.

Vince Carter was named Player of the Game.

I'll do game 1's for the Red Conference either later tonight or tomorrow.

Question: is it safe to say the two one-seeded teams are going to the finals? Looking through all of the rosters, I'm not sure how they would lose in their conferences. :P

Probably.

My dark horse is the #4 seed in the Purple Conference, though. They were only 33-49 that year, but Carter missed time with injuries, Rose missed time and they also made the Antonio Davis/Jerome Williams for Jalen Rose/Donyell Marshall trade midway through the season so an adjustment process was needed.

I'd be surprised if the two #1 seeds didn't make the finals, though. They are clearly the two best teams that the Raptors have had in their history.

Red Conference

Game 1

#1 2006-2007 Raptors

vs

#8 1995-1996 Raptors

Results: 1995-1996 upsets 2006-2007 92-83

Damon Stoudamire led the expansion Raptors to the huge game 1 upset by scoring 17 points, grabbing 5 rebounds and dishing out 9 assists while holding TJ Ford to an abysmal 3-14 shooting and just 8 points, although he did have 8 assists. Zan Tabak chipped in with 14 points and 7 rebounds in the win.

Chris Bosh led the 2006-2007 Raptors with 18 points and 7 rebounds, but he received little help as Rasho Nesterovic was the only other player in double digits with 10 points. The starting backcourt of TJ Ford and Anthony Parker combined for 15 points on 6-25 shooting.

Damon Stoudamire was named Player of the Game.

#2 1999-2000 Raptors

vs

#7 2010-2011 Raptors

Results: 1999-2000 defeats 2010-2011 97-90

The 1999-2000 Raptors starting backcourt of Vince Carter (29 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists) and Doug Christie (22 points, 8 assists and 3 steals) shouldered the offensive load and led them to a huge 4th quarter comeback victory. They were trailing 71-64 heading into the fourth quarter but outscored the 2010-2011 Raptors 33-19 in the deciding frame to get a 7 point win. Carter and Christie combined for 27 of the 33 points scored in the quarter.

The 2010-2011 Raptors had a balanced offensive attack that saw Andrea Bargnani (18 points), DeMar DeRozan (15 points), Jose Calderon (16 points), James Johnson (13 points) and Amir Johnson (12 points) all score in double digits and they also got 15 rebounds from Reggie Evans. Unfortunately for them, they went cold in the 4th quarter shooting just 28% from the field.

Vince Carter was named Player of the Game.

#3 2009-2010 Raptors

vs

#6 1996-1997 Raptors

Results: 2009-2010 defeat 1996-1997 136-114

In a very high scoring affair, the 2009-2010 Raptors used a 42-22 point 4th quarter to pick up an easy 22 point game 1 win. They were led by Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani who put up 31 points and 13 rebounds on 12-24 shooting and 32 points and 9 rebounds on 12-17 shooting respectively. Hedo Turkoglu and Jose Calderon chipped in with 17 points each as well.

Damon Stoudamire had a fantastic game in the loss as he scored 22 points and handed out 16 assists. Walt Williams also had a strong showing with 24 points and 9 rebounds. Marcus Camby was dominated in the paint, though, as he pulled down only 3 rebounds and managed only 1 block in 30 minutes.

Andrea Bargnani was named Player of the Game.

#4 1998-1999 Raptors

vs

#5 2004-2005 Raptors

Results: 1998-1999 defeat 2004-2005 90-89

In a very close game that saw both star players struggle (Vince Carter was 6-20 for 14 points and Chris Bosh was 3-12 for 6 points), the 1998-1999 Raptors pulled out the 1 point victory behind Doug Christie's 17 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and Kevin Willis' 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Rafer Alson picked up the slack for Bosh's struggles with 24 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists and Jalen Rose added 19 points of his own.

This game was all over the place as the 2004-2005 Raptors got off to a fantastic start and led 35-15 after the 1st quarter. The 1998-1999 team answered back with a 26-13 2nd quarter to cut the lead to 7 at the half. The 1998-1999 team continued to chip away at the lead and managed to erase it completely on a Christie buzzer beating 3 to take a 1 point lead into the 4th. Rafer Alston broke down Alvin Williams and managed to dunk the ball over Kevin Willis with 10 seconds left in the 4th quarter to give his team a 1 point lead. Butch Carter took a timeout and drew up a play for Vince Carter, despite his struggles all game long. Carter received the inbound from Christie at the three point line and held the ball for 5 seconds. Kevin Willis came up and set a screen on Jalen Rose, Carter drove to his left while Willis rolled to the basket. Matt Bonner gave Rose help and doubled Carter, who found Willis on the right wing the basket for the game winning jumper as time expired.

Kevin Willis was named Player of the Game.

So after two days and 1 game of each series, is this worth me continuing? It takes about 45 minutes to an hour to sim the 4 games after setting up depth charts and writing my quick little recaps. I have no problem with that time as I expected as much when coming up with the idea, but I don't want to waste time if nobody is even interested in this, views the thread or anything like that.

Also, if you have any suggestions as to what could make this more interesting, please let me know.

Feelin' you, bro. They went too far tho'. I mean got nothin' against putting the Maple Leaf on the jersey, that's all good by me but eliminating purple... I'll never forgive 'em for it. <_< Was in mad love with the purple unis. Sexiest jersey out there (not countin' the Clippers alternative road blue 'RC Cola' jerseys).

Game 2

#1 2000-2001 Raptors

vs

#8 1997-1998 Raptors

Results: 2000-2001 defeat 1997-1998 90-82

The 2000-2001 Raptors took game 2 behind a huge game from Vince Carter. He finished with 36 points, 5 rebounds and 5 blocks from the shooting guard position. The heavy favourite 2001 squad got off to a terrible start as they trailed 24-12 after the first quarter but Carter put them on his back from that moment on, a move that was necessary to pick up the victory as the other four starters combined to shoot a woeful 11-37 from the field and only contributed 26 points between themselves.

The 1998 squad were led by a balanced offensive attack that featured 4 players with 10 or more points, led by Doug Christie's 20 but their poor shooting (35% for the game) and their inability to get to, and convert from the free throw line (Vince Carter got to the line more than the entire team combined) as they shot just 7-13 from the chairity stripe proved to be their downfall.

The heavy underdogs fall 2 games to none and know full well that they may have blown the most winnable game of the series.

Vince Carter was named Player of the Game

#2 2001-2002 Raptors

vs

#7 2002-2003 Raptors

Results: 2001-2002 defeat 2002-2003 100-91

A balanced offensive attack that saw Vince Carter score 20 points, Keon Clark score 19, Morris Peterson score 18 and Antonio Davis score 16 was too much for the 2002-2003 Raptors to handle. The 2002 Raptors also completely dominated the glass as Antonio Davis grabbed 14 rebounds while Keon Clark and Jerome Williams both hauled down 13 as the 2002 Raptors outrebounded the 2003 62-39 for the game.

The 2003 squad was led by Jerome Williams 18 points and 11 rebounds and Voshon Leonard's 20 points. Ultimately, their inability to control the defensive glass was their downfall as they were outscored on 2nd chance points 24-6 for the game and ended up attempting 8 less shots overall despite only turning the ball over 7 times to the 2002 squad's 15.

Antonio Davis was named Player of the Game

#3 2007-2008 Raptors

vs

#6 2005-2006 Raptors

Results: 2007-2008 defeat 2005-2006 122-87

In a game that was dominated from start to finish by the 2008 Raptors, they enetered the 4th quarter leading by 31 points (91-60) and still managed to win the 4th quarter despite coasting and resting their starters. Chris Bosh and Andrea Bargnani had 22 points each (Bosh added 14 rebounds and 3 blocks as well), while the 2008 supporting cast of Anthony Parker, Jose Calderon, Jamario Moon and Carlos Delfino all added double digit points from the perimeter. They shot a blistering 55% from the field, 50% from the three point line and 90% from the foul line, had 30 assists and only turned the ball over 8 times.

Chris Bosh had 20 points and 9 rebounds but turned the ball over 5 times in the loss. Morris Peterson and Mike James chipped in with 16 and 14 points respectively but shot poorly from the field as both were under 42%.

Chris Bosh (2008 version) was named Player of the Game

#4 2003-2004 Raptors

vs

#5 2008-2009 Raptors

Results: 2008-2009 defeat 2003-2004 108-99

In what was a tightly contested game for 3 quarters, it was the 2nd quarter where this game was won, or lost depending on your viewpoint as the 2009 team outscored the 2004 team 34-18. The rest of the 3 quarters saw the 2004 team outscore the 2009 team 81-74 but their poor performance in the 2nd was too much to overcome.

Anthony Parker led the 2004's offensive attack with 22 points, but it was a group effort that got the job done as Chris Bosh had 19 points, Jermaine O'Neal had 18, Andrea Bargnani and Jose Calderon both had 13 points and Jason Kapono had 10. Calderon, Bargnani and O'Neal all had double doubles in the win as well, as Calderon handed out 11 assists while Bargnani and O'Neal grabbed 11 boards each. The duo also blocked 5 shots in the win.

For the 2004 squad Vince Carter had 21 points, Jalen Rose had 19 points and 8 assists and Alvin Williams added 16 points and 6 assists of his own. Nobody really had a bad game, aside from Donyell Marshall's 3-9 shooting, but the 2004 team just couldn't manage to dig themselves out of the hole that they dug in the 2nd quarter.

Anthony Parker was named Player of the Game.

Sorry for the delay. I have been busy getting organized for college and all that as classes started today. I had a class get canceled tonight so I'll sim the next round of games right now.

Red Conference

Game 2

#1 2006-2007 Raptors

vs

#8 1995-1996 Raptors

Results: 2006-2007 defeat 1995-1996 105-96

After the upset in Game 1, the heavy favourite 2007 team came out looking to avenge the loss. They got off to a decent start and held a 1 point lead after the 1st quarter, but turned it on in the 2nd extending the lead to 10 going into half time. From that point on the two teams played each other to pretty much a standstill and the 2007 squad came away with a 9 point game 2 victory to even the series at 1 game a piece.

Chris Bosh led the 2007 team with 24 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks but the difference in this game was the much improved play of their starting backcourt of TJ Ford and Anthony Parker who combined for 30 points and 4 steals on 12-24 shooting, which was twice as many points as they scored in game 1. Joey Graham also chipped in with 16 points in 22 minutes off of the bench.

For the expansion Raptors, Damon Stoudamire continued his superb play from game 1 and put up 25 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists, but Alvin Robertson struggled only scoring 7 points on 3-10 shooting in the loss.

Chris Bosh was named Player of the Game

#2 1999-2000 Raptors

vs

#7 2010-2011 Raptors

Results: 1999-2000 defeat 2010-2011 121-101

After a fairly close 7 point win in game 1, the 2000 Raptors looked to have another tight game on their hands as they were outscored 31-28 in the 1st quarter. After the 1st quarter, Butch Carter ripped into his team and they responded by outscoring the 2011 Raptors by 7 points in the 2nd quarter, 6 in the 3rd quarter and 10 in the 4th to come away with an easy 20 point game 2 win.

Doug Christie led the way for the 2000 Raptors with 21 points and 7 assists while Vince Carter added 18 points and 5 assists of his own. Tracy McGrady chipped in with 15 points and 8 rebounds in the victory and Dell Curry came off of the bench to hit 4 threes for 12 points.

For the losing 2011 Raptors, DeMar DeRozan scored 22 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, but Andrea Bargnani was shut down by the Antonio Davis/Kevin Willis duo as he scored just 14 points on 5-15 shooting and was held to just 3 rebounds. Reggie Evans continued his strong work on the glass with 14 boards.

Doug Christie was named Player of the Game.

#3 2009-2010 Raptors

vs

#6 1996-1997 Raptors

Results: 1996-1997 upset 2009-2010 107-97

After a 22 point game 1 shellacking, the 1997 Raptors bounced back and came away with a 10 point game 2 win to even the series at 1 game a piece after outscoring the higher seeded Raptors by 13 points in the 2nd half, including a 25-18 4th quarter.

Doug Christie and Walt Williams both had very strong games in the win. Christie had 25 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists on a very efficient 10-14 shooting and Williams added 24 points and 10 rebounds on a respectable 9-16 shooting of his own. The strong play from these two made it so that the 1997 team was able to overcome a poor performance from Damon Stoudamire (11 points, 9 assists on 5-17 shooting) and pick up the much needed victory.

Sonny Weems led the 2010 Raptors with 15 points on 7-12 shooting, but the rest of the team struggled mightily from the floor highlighted by Chris Bosh's 4-14 shooting performance. He did manage to grab 15 rebounds but his complete lack of offense (10 points total) was too little for the 2010 team to overcome.

Doug Christie was named Player of the Game

#4 1998-1999 Raptors

vs

#5 2004-2005 Raptors

Results: 1998-1999 crush 2004-2005 106-75

Unlike game 1 that was a back and forth affair throughout the game that ended up being decided by just a single point, this game was not a closely contested contest, despite a 2 point game after the 1st quarter. The 1999 team took control of this game in the 2nd quarter and didn't look back after that as they cruised to a 31 point game 2 win and a 2-0 series lead.

After a tough game 1, Vince Carter bounced back in a big way in game 2. He scored 27 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, dished out 6 assists and blocked 3 shots in the win. Oh yeah, he also shot 10-13 from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line. Doug Christie added 18 points and 6 rebounds and the starting frontcourt of Charles Oakley and Kevin Willis combined for 28 points and 16 rebounds on an 13-22 shooting.

Unlike Carter, Chris Bosh's game 1 struggles continued in game 2 as he scored just 12 points on 6-16 shooting. Also unlike game 1, Rafter Alston was unable to make up for Bosh's struggles as he scored just 13 points on 5-14 shooting of his own. Jalen Rose was the only starter who had a decent game with his 13 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists on 5-9 shooting, but that was hardly enough to counter the dominant player of Vince Carter on the other end of the floor.

Vince Carter was named Player of the Game.

Game 3

#1 2000-2001 Raptors

vs

#8 1997-1998 Raptors

Results: 2000-2001 defeat 1997-1998 115-94

The number 1 overall seeded 2001 Raptors dominated the 3rd quarter outscoring their opponent 35-17 en route to a 21 point grubbing to take a commanding 3-0 series lead over the 1998 team.

Vince Carter had another great game scoring 30 points, hauling down 6 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists, although he shot poorly from the field at just 9-24. He did make up for it a bit by going 9-11 from the chairity stripe. Alvin Williams had a strong game as well scoring 18 points and passing the ball well for 7 assists while the Raptors three headed big man trio of Antonio Davis, Charles Oakley and Jerome Williams continued their domination of the glass by grabbing a combined 31 rebounds between the three of them.

Damon Stoudamire carried the offensive load for the 1998 team by scoring 25 points and handing out 10 assists. Doug Christie scored the ball fairly well with 16 points, but did an awful job of taking care of the ball as he committed 7 turnovers. Marcus Camby finally woke up on the defensive end of the floor by blocking a very impressive 7 shots and grabbing 8 rebounds, but he continues to struggle offensively scoring just 6 points on 3-8 shooting.

Vince Carter was named Player of the Game.

#2 2001-2002 Raptors

vs

#7 2002-2003 Raptors

Results: 2001-2002 defeat 2002-2003 112-94

After two single digit victories to take a 2-0 series lead, the 2002 Raptors turned on the heat in game 3 and won this one by 18 points to take the commanding 3-0 series lead. Things didn't look good early for the 2002 Raptors early on as the found themselves trailing 35-26 after the 1st quarter but they dominated the 2nd and 3rd quarters outscoring the 2003 Raptors 57-33 before coasting through an easy 4th quarter as the game was decided by midway through the 3rd.

Vince Carter led the way with 26 points and 8 rebounds and Antonio Davis chipped in with his best game of the series by scoring 20 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Morris Peterson added 15 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in the win.

For the losing 2003 Raptors, Alvin Williams had 18 points and 4 rebounds, but turned the ball over more times than he handed out assists (4 turnovers to 3 assists) and his inability to get his teammates open looks was evident by the 40.5% that they shot from the field. Jerome Williams had a strong night on the glass with 14 rebounds in the loss.

Vince Carter was named Player of the Game.

For the 3rd straight game, the 2008 Raptors crushed the 2006 team by double digits, winning this one by 25 points behind an offensive explosion that saw them score 109 points in the final 3 quarters.

Chris Bosh led the offense with 33 points, TJ Ford added 18 points in 18 minutes and Jose Calderon had a brilliant floor game scoring 15 points to go with his 16 assists and only 1 turnover. Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon both chipped in with 12 points each. The 2008 Raptors shot nearly 60% for the game (59.8 to be exact) as they put on an absolute offensive clinic in this one.

Morris Peterson and Mike James both had strong offensive games scoring 29 and 19 points respectively and both of them shot 9-15 from the floor. Once again, though, Chris Bosh struggled shooting just 6-14 from the floor and Jalen Rose was absolutely invisible all night long scoring just 3 points for the game. Charlie Villanueva also struggled scoring 11 points on 3-9 shooting as he has had a miserable series thus far.

Chris Bosh (2008 version) was named Player of the Game.

#4 2003-2004 Raptors

vs

#5 2008-2009 Raptors

Results: 2003-2004 defeat 2008-2009 94-87

In the first close game of the day, this back and forth battle between two evenly matched teams continued as neither one has been able to win conescutive games in this series. The game got off to a very sluggish start as the score was just 17-12 in favour of the 2004 Raptors after the first quarter, but the 2004 team found their offensive legs in the 2nd as they put up 34 points and looked this game looked over as they took a commanding 17 point lead into halftime. The 2009 team wouldn't go away, though, as they bounced back with a strong 3rd quarter holding the 2004 team to just 12 points while putting up 20 of their own. They managed to win the 4th quarter 33-31 won, but they just didn't have enough left in the tank to dig themselves out of the hole that they put themsleves in during the 2nd quarter.

Donyell Marshall bounced back from his poor game 2 performance in a huge way as he was 1 rebound shy of a 20/20 game. He finished with 20 points, 19 rebounds and 3 blocks on 7-12 shooting. Vince Carter scored 25 points but it took him 24 shots to get those points and Jalen Rose had a near triple double of 10 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists. The rookie Chris Bosh had a solid game as well scoring 17 points and grabbing 9 rebounds.

It was the Jermaine O'Neal and Chris Bosh show for the 2009 Raptors as they combined for 41 points, 22 rebounds and 6 blocks, but unfotunately for them, they receieved no help from the perimeter as Anthony Parker, Jason Kapono and Jamario Moon combined for 15 points on 5-25 shooting (although Parker did have 10 assists).

Donyell Marshall was named Player of the Game.
