NomarFachix
Could possibly even go to IR. Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning had further neck surgery Thursday, the team announced. Manning decided to have the surgery after consultation with a half-dozen doctors who reached a consensus that the most viable option would be a one-level cervical neck fusion in the wake of his May 23 surgery to repair a bulging disk. It's unclear whether Manning would be able to return to play this season. http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/6944302/indianapolis-colts-peyton-manning-surgery-neck-sources-say

Owner Real Deal Posted September 8, 2011 Owner Report Share Posted September 8, 2011 He's done for the year. I don't see how he'd be able to play. It's not as bad as my dad's neck and his surgery, but it's up there. Manning is actually closer to Rich Gannon than I initially thought, although it's not as severe. Gannon had a stable fracture of his C7, which basically landed him on the retired list (he was also 38, so healing was a bit of a problem, too). Peyton's injury could risk his career if he decides to come back too soon. Peyton's problem, although I haven't heard him say it yet, is degeneration of his cervical spine...simply because the surgery is to eliminate pressure off the bulging disc (that's what the fusion does). The concern is how his body reacts to the problem he's having. I'm 100% sure he's having trouble throwing the ball, turning his head, and even gripping it, because those nerve fibers run through his arms. My dad couldn't work for months, and he actually went to work early, and it screwed him up again. He does manual labor (he's an electrician), which isn't the best job to have when you have a major neck injury (fractured three of the seven vertebrae, almost paralyzed him), but playing football and getting hit every week is a different animal. This is a big, big deal.

I'm calling Kerry Collins leading the Colts to the playoffs
fish7718
This is a big, big deal.I had no doubt in my mind it was a big deal when I heard Manning was actually going to miss a start. Now that I know he's opted for possible season ending surgery, it's a huge deal. Manning is a competitor and wants to go out and earn his contract and win. It must be killing him to have to do this. Not surprising he would go out and consult so many doctors.

Now that I know he's opted for possible season ending surgery, it's a huge deal. Manning is a competitor and wants to go out and earn his contract and win. It must be killing him to have to do this. Not surprising he would go out and consult so many doctors.Well, before this recent surgery, even when I found out he was going to miss the game (which was made official yesterday, or...can't remember), I figured it was going to be a month-to-month thing. The complications AFTER a neck surgery indicate that his nerves are causing him a lot of trouble, and after reading the details of the first AND second surgery, those problems can lead to an athlete being paralyzed. I know people aren't going to think about this threatening his entire career yet, because the Colts and Peyton aren't making it out to be THAT big of a deal (they won't even say he's done for the year, and he may not be, but he's close). Thing is, one more surgical procedure probably ends it all. Doctors will more than likely tell him it's football and living the second half of his life in a wheelchair or with severe nerve damage, or taking his money and finding another way to stay involved in the sport. I'm not a fan of the Colts, but I'm a fan of Manning (much like the Rockets and Yao), and I don't want to see the guy go out like that. After seeing all of the big hits and concussions occurring last season, though, it has to be weighing on Peyton's mind, even a little.
