I love the argument about how great players can't be considered great because they played with great teammates. Makes complete sense.

I have not made that argument, nor have I argued that Roy was not great. I don't think ECN has either. Nobody has.

A few of your posts have said that it was not just Hasek's statistics, but the "timing" of his goals that he lets in.

However, earlier in this thread, you were using the Penguins (not Crosby's) Stanley Cup victory as a way to prop him up over Ovechkin. However, according to your criteria or reasoning, he shouldn't get much credit for the Stanley Cup because he did shit in the finals, which is "where it matters most", right?

Agreed.

On a similar yet unrelated note, the divisions are so unbalanced this year, in both conferences. Anybody think it's time for the NHL to change the playoff format up? I don't want to eliminate divisions, since I understand why the league wants to keep some value attached to winning the division. However, maybe adopt the NBAs format? Maybe have it so the division winner is guaranteed a seed no lower than 4 or 5. This year, it looks like Nashville/Detroit and Philadelphia/Pittsburgh (or New York) will be first round matchups. Meaning that two top level teams will be knocked out in the first round. I know that this is unavoidable sometimes with the current playoff format, but still something to think about.

And yes I know, this post should be taken with a grain of salt coming from a bitter Flyers fan <_< .

Bitter Flyers fan..........but, yes, I understand the frustration.

The playoffs aren't a tree format, it resets after each round with the best team playing the worst. You try and finish as best you can, because if you are first, you instantly play the worst team left in your conference.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Stanley_Cup_playoffs

In that example, Boston played the 6th seed in the 2nd round, not a 4/5 seed. As far as I know, the system hasn't changed.

This is why playoff hockey pools are such a bitch lol, because you know nothing about who your team will be playing beyond the first round until the games start.

For all i know you could just be assuming that the 2nd and 3rd seeds win, but I don't know. I would just try to finish as best as possible because you never know what will happen once that puck drops.

I was just going off the assumption that the higher seeds win, but you make a valid point. I did neglect to consider that they aren't a tree format (as evident by me having a possible Van/Chi 2nd round matchup, which wouldn't happen if Vancouver stayed ind 2nd), even though I did know that.

It is also worth noting that home ice advantage would be huge for a team like St. Louis considering how stingy Hitch is about getting the matchups he wants out there and how important it is to the Blues' success.

Just to talk about something other than Hasek/Roy, does anybody else think it would be more beneficial to finish 2nd than 1st in the West?

Lets say Dallas/Phoenix win the Pacific Division (the other finishes 7th), one of San Jose/Los Angeles finishes 8th and St. Louis holds onto 1st and Canucks stay 2nd.

If you are Vancouver, your road to the Stanley Cup Final is:

1st round: Dallas/Phoenix

2nd round: Dallas/Phoenix or Chicago

3rd round St. Louis or Nashville/Detroit

Now, if you are St. Louis, your road is:

1st round: SJ/LA

2nd round: Detroit/Nashville

3rd round: Vancouver

Strictly based on matchups alone, I'd much rather have Vancouver's path than St. Louis'. I know there is the whole "you have to go through them eventually" but still, I'll take the easier road where you are less likely to be banged up (just look at Vancouver in the Final last year, they were just physically spent after 3 hard fought series) than having to go through what is to likely be 3 very physical, hard fought series.

I'm pretty sure the top seeded team always plays the lowest seeded team. So if say 1st seed, 2nd seed, 6th, and 4th seeds won, then 1st would play 6th, and 2nd would play 4th.

Shit, you said almost the same thing. Sorry didn't scroll down that far.

Crosby's career is nowhere near being finished. Neither is Ovechkin. If Ovechkin finished his NHL career without a ring, wouldn't that rank him different all time?

I didn't think of it that way, but I do see your point here. However, the debate was about Crosby and Ovechkin's career so far when you mentioned the Stanley Cup, so when ranking their career up to this point, the rest of their career means nothing as that hasn't happened yet.

Anyways, that discussion has run its course. It will just be going in circles. I know everyone thinks both Hasek and Roy are great goalies, so I'll just end it on that.

So who makes the playoffs in the East, Buffalo or Washington? Or do both happen and Florida chokes away their spot?

In the west? Dallas, LA, SJ, Phoenix?

I'm thinking the standings pretty much stay the exact same with Washington in the 8th spotin the East and LA, Phoenix and SJ getting in the West, but SJ moving to 7th and Phoenix falling to 8th.

I'd prefer Washington nab the 3rd seed and Florida drops to 8, but I'd rather see either of them over the Buffalo Miller's

Tough call in the West, I don't mind any of those teams.. would love to see Quick and Phoenix make it

This week, the Flyers and Rangers coaching staffs each called out the Penguins for being dirty and being whiners. Good to know the Flyers aren't alone!

It going to get worst because it going be interesting series when Pens play Flyers since its pretty much confirmed they will be playing in 1st round.
