Unchallenged Kim Collins eases his way into the finals

Kim Collins has proven he is only getting better with age. On Monday, (24th October, 2011) Collins shattered a 28 year old Pan Am Games record when he ran a time of 10.00, eclipsing the old record of 10.06 seconds held by Cuba’s Penalver Leandro.

 

Running out of lane 4 Collins looked at ease and was never challenged in the race by any of the other competitors. After two false starts in his heat, Kim remained focus and was able to demonstrate to the western hemisphere his true potentials. Kim won his heat resoundingly establishing a new Pan American Games Record of 10.00 seconds, 200ths of a second from his lifetime best.

Clarke takes the men’s 100m for Jamaica

 

Lerone Clarke lived up to Jamaica’s worldwide reputation in the sprints, taking the 100m final in a close race with St. Kitts and Nevis’ 2003 World champion and 2011 Daegu bronze medallist Kim Collins, who ran a Pan American Games record of 10.00 sec in the second semi-final on Monday (24).

 

The 30-year old blazed to the second fastest race in his career (10.01) to edge out Collins, who had to settle for second with 10.04. Trinidad and Tobago’s Emmanuel Callender held on for third in 10.16.

 

Clarke became only the third Jamaican to win the 100m in the 60-year history of the Games, following Donald Quarrie in 1971 and Michael Frater in 2003.

You Again? Kim Collins Wins Silver at Pan Am Games

Basseterre, St. Kitts-After many campaigns, St. Kitts & Nevis has finally won its first medal at the Pan-Am Games and it took the indomitable veteran Kim Collins to place the seal of recognition and achievement on behalf of his ever grateful nation.

 

Earlier this year, after his outstanding performance at the 2011 World Games, where he won a bronze medal, Collins had indicated that one of the reasons he dusted off his track shoes was because the country had not yet found a successor who could carry the banner of the national flag at the international level, winning titles and medals. In particular, he wanted to make sure that his country occupied a position on the podium at the 2011 Pan Am Games, thus his decision to participate. It was a good decision because it ended with him breaking a two decades old record, to become the holder of the 100m record at the Pan Am Games, when he ran 10.00 in his heat to qualify for the Finals on Tuesday morning.

 

After his record breaking performance the 35 year old Collins was firm favourite going into the Finals of the 100meters on Tuesday night, but unfortunately he was edged out of the Gold Medal by a Jamaican sprinter, Lerone Clarke, leaving him with the Silver. Running from the 3rd lane with a +0.2 headwind, Kim got off to his usual fast start but was challenged all the way by Lerone Clark who himself got a fast start and went on to edge Collins10.04 on the line with a 10.02 clocking. In third place was Emanuel Callender of Trinidad & Tobago, making it an all-Caribbean affair.

Brazil sweeps 4x100, St. Kitts & Nevis wins silver

 

Aided by Guadalajara’s 1558m altitude, both Brazilian 4x100m teams and the Cuban 4x400m squads posted world class times. The South Americans equalled their Games record of 38.18, set in 1999.

 

Ailson Feitosa, Sandro Viana, Nilson Andre and Bruno de Barros formed the quartet. Without 2003 World champion and 2011 bronze medallist Kim Collins, Saint Kitts still secured silver with three of their Daegu bronze winning squad members: Jason Rogers, Antoine Adams and Brijesh Lawrence. Delwayne Delaney ran the third leg. The USA finished third in 39.17.

 

The Brazilian girls, who ran the final in Daegu, improved their South American record (42.92) set in the Korean city to 42.85 to win their country’s first ever women’s 4x100m gold at the continental level.

 

The quartet was formed by 200 winner Ana Claudia Silva, Vanda Gomes, Franciela Krasucki and 100m champion Rosângela Santos. The USA (43.10) and Colombia (43.44) completed the medallists.

 

With three quarter milers, Cuban 4x400m team posted an impressive 2:59.43, their first sub three-minute clocking since winning the 1992 Olympic bronze. Noel Ruiz, 400m Hurdles champion Omar Cisneros and 2010 World Indoor silver medallist William Collazo were joined by Triple Jump specialist Yoandri Betanzos, who ran the second leg. A close final led the Dominican Republic (3:00.44) and Venezuela (3:00.82) to national records.
