Clippers Interested in Prince, Butler

Recommended Posts

The Clippers have reached out to free agent Tayshaun Prince to gauge his interest in playing for them this season, a source said Wednesday afternoon.

Prince, a 6-foot-9 forward who has played all nine of his NBA seasons with the Detroit Pistons, fits the need the Clippers have for a veteran, quality small forward.

He averaged 14.1 points last season on a declining Pistons team. Prince is known as an outstanding defender who can guard small forwards and shooting guards. He has made 36.8% of his three-pointers over his career, 46.4% of his field goals.

Prince, 31, made $11.1 million last season and may command a hefty salary.

But the Clippers have the money to spend.

Their payroll is $45 million, $13 million below the projected $58 million salary cap.

Prince also is a Los Angeles native, having attended Dominguez High School.

Teams were allowed to start talking to players’ representatives on Wednesday about contracts for free agents but cannot officially make verbal or written agreements until the free agency period and training camps open on Dec. 9.

The Clippers also have interest in talking to Dallas Mavericks small forward Caron Butler.

They definitely need to find a small forward since neither Gomes or Aminu are capable of being starters on a playoff team, which is undoubtedly what the Clippers are hoping to be this year.

Who do you think would be the better fit for the Clippers between Prince or Butler?

Who do you think would be more likely to end up in a Clipper uniform?

I've heard that the Clippers GM really wants a guy like Prince, he's the ideal fit at SF with championship experience. Butler is more of a risk anyway.

However, given Gordon's injury history, they might prefer Caron because he's the more dynamic scorer of the two.

I think we've been mentioned in every rumor out there lmao. Nenê is a good player but could this possibly mean that Clippers rather have nene then DeAndre? I mean we have both Kaveman and DeAndre so I don't know why they're looking at Nenê. Also, in my opinion, Prince would be the best option for the SF hole. Ekker of course it's all about Griffin. That's how it works. Star players want to play with someone like Griffin. Luck or not... it takes an effort and motivation from our front office to actually make it happen and they are working hard on it. Griffin creates the interest, FO has to be the ones working the deal and pulling the trigger. So they should get just as much credit as Griffin.

Ramona Shelborne of ESPN LA has just reported that Clippers meeting with Caron Butler went so well that the two parties are meeting again Tuesday. This guy is a recent two time all star. A bit selfish offensively but a HUGE upgrade over Gomes and a very capable SF. Good on both ends of the floor. "Sources" say he's 100 percent and looks great. I doubt Olshey and VDN would be bringing him back second time if he didn't look great in workout. I just hope he's reasonable with the salary he demands. One thing I love about this guy is his toughness/swagger. He's one of the few guys in the NBA who has the heart and fire to go at players like Kobe and Lebron and hold his own.

Clippers offer Caron Butler 7 mill a year

EXACTLY what I predicted. Broussard reports Clippers/Nets offered him 7 mill a year. Bulls/Spurs only offering 5 mill a year mid level exception. Caron Butler needs to take the offer and we need to keep our group together. Years aren't reported so who knows. Probably 3 year deals. BTW I think 7 mill a year over 3 years is very fair and smart of the Clippers. I say we keep 2012 Minny pick and draft a SF from this loaded draft with ton of SF's and let Caron groom them into the role of starter by the time he's older. Only thing we need to do is maybe trade Mo Williams+Kaman for Rajon Rondo or something like that. I have a feeling with Caron we are going to need a more capable playmaking PG to get everybody shots.
