Lakers can get a deal right now if they offer up Pau + Bynum. In my opinion you might as well do it. This is the best center in the game and you traded Odom already and now your out the running for CP3 and you need a future for Kobe after he retires go get Dwight right now. And for Pau knowing he was on the verge of being traded after David Stern shot down two trades for Chris Paul going to LA Pau has to know his time in LA has ran out and there is no going back LA should make the move.

Bynum, the $8.9 million TPE, Ebanks, Caracter, and two first-rounders should be enough. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with Brook Lopez. He's not as efficient, he rebounds like Amare, and he's not a legit defensive anchor.

Take away the injury history of Drew, and this discussion isn't even applicable here. Thing is, all of those major injuries happened with guys falling on Drew, or putting their foot under him, and Bynum is now reportedly at 270 pounds (which is much less than the 285 or 290 he was reported to be at one point), and both Vitti and our assistants have spend numerous hours showing Drew how to protect his knees while in the paint (bending them at all times, for example).

People just don't want to see him in LA, simple as that. I'm sure I wouldn't either, if I was a fan of another team. It wasn't too long ago that we were discussing teams that should take a chance on Drew...but now, it's almost like nobody should.

^Odom is gone

Bynum and Gasol is too much..sorry to say. Short term at least. Longterm is a different story.

Hopefully we can pull of a deal surrounding Bynum. A Dwight - Gasol duo would be unreal; by the far the best frontcourt in the league.

Prolly not gonna happen but a man can hope.

Bynum I believe is under contract for 19 more months and then is a free agent. Brook is a RFA after this season and loves Orlando. Lopez has also not missed a game while Bynum has missed nearly 160. With Roy retiring due to a knee injury, you can only imagine teams will look closer into players with injuries. Heck, Nets were doing it before this...SAR!

Drew has a team option after this season.

I don't buy the whole Bynum upside thing. If he was going to be something special in the league he would've already become that. This is like his 7th year in the league now. He can't play heavy minutes because his body pretty much can't take it. He's never healthy. IMO Lopez is a better, safer bet to not only become a better player but to stay there as well.

I'll take Lopez and the Nets picks all day plus the ability to dump Hedo's contract.

Didn't realize Odom was gone, Lakers are dumb

How could you be reluctant to give up Pau (how many good yrs left?) Bynum (injury history and all) for a dominant 7' in his prime? LOL @ the laker fans on here

You have to be reluctant, because we'd be starting Ron Artest as PF, with Derrick Caracter as our backup center, and Matt Barnes as our backup PF.

C - Howard | Caracter

PF - Artest | Barnes

SF - Ebanks | Walton

SG - Kobe | Goudelock

PG - Fisher | Blake | Morris

No way.

Couldn't the Lakers sign some role players? Or, maybe get a third-team involved? Regardless, Pau & Bynum is a very reasonable asking price and I stand by that.

it's not that we don't agree that Pau/Bynum is a reasonable price, it's just that it isn't a good deal for the Lakers. you can't honestly say that it is a good deal either when you look at our lineup

The lineup sucks but the chance to get a once in a lifetime player like Howard is hard to pass up...

Howard + Kobe (healthy) makes you a contender for the next 2 seasons. Beyond that, you will have teh chance to build around Howard and replace a legend like Kobe with another one in his prime!

Or we can contend for 4-5 years and build around Pau/Bynum

Contending, and winning championships, are two different things.

If we can keep our current roster, and replace Odom with someone like Paul Millsap, we'll have a great chance in the West.

Otherwise, if it's just Kobe and Howard (and scrubs, basically), we'll get tossed in the playoffs by the Thunder, Mavericks, Clippers (if they get CP3), maybe even the Spurs and Blazers.

Unfortunately, the Lakers have put themselves in a hole. We have veteran players that are nearly worthless to other teams (Fisher, Ron, Blake) and second-round picks that are big question marks (Morris, Goudelock, Ebanks, Caracter). Barnes has been on every team in the NBA, it seems. After that...Kobe is still Kobe, but over 30 years old. Howard would be the only person around, eventually...

Kobe would be making $20+ million probably the rest of the way. Howard will be at $20+ million. Probably $50 million or more at one point, for two players, which means we'll have no max contract to offer.

Once Kobe goes, it will be just Howard and MLE's...and that's the Orlando Magic.

At that time, the Clippers may be the destination for big-name players, and Howard will be a bit older. He's 26 years old right now.

For most teams, getting to the conference finals is a big deal, and those front offices play to get that far. If we have Kobe Bryant, and we don't win championships, it's considered a failure...and that's how it always has been.

In fact, many consider it that, even non-fans. The 2005-06 season (and the one after that) were considered failures, and people talked shit on Kobe, even though we made the playoffs AND took the Suns to seven games. However, when a team like the Magic get eliminated in the first round, people don't say anything about Howard...just his teammates...and that's the difference between the Magic and the Lakers, and the superstar factor in each city.

You are not contending in 4-5 years with no KB, a 35 year old Pau Gasol and a Bynum that may be playing 40 games a year by then...Come on now. Getting Howard sets the Lakers up for the future. They are kind of rebuiliding by getting him in the sense that they now have that dominant star for the next 5 years (at least I would suppose) to place good players around.

Laker fans think they can contend with just Kobe and 4 handicapped players.
