Racist Chant Rocks Kenmore East HS Girl’s Team

How this was going on for years, we have no clue. Western New York must be very, very white. And not for nothing, but who started this and thought this would be acceptable? A dozen girls on the Kenmore East High School girl’s basketball team were disciplined recently for a chant that they’ve been doing for years as part of their warm-up routine. We’re still not sure how this would get anyone fired up to play basketball or to do anything really. The girls would chant, “One, Two, Three…N-word!” But, you guessed it, they didn’t really say the truncated version.

 

So, apparently school coaches and administrators had no idea that this went on, probably because no one pays attention to girl’s basketball. It’s easy to overlook. They found out about it when sophomore Tyra Batts, the only black girl on the team, was brawling with another teammate about it. Seriously? You had the audacity to still do the chant with a black girl on the team? That is, indeed, asking for an ass whooping.

 

“I said, ‘You’re not allowed to say that word because I don’t like that word,’” Batts told the Buffalo News. “They said, ‘You know we’re not racist, Tyra. It’s just a word, not a label.’ I was outnumbered.” Superintendent Mark Mondanaro said that the chant was “wrong, unacceptable, unfortunate and will never, ever be tolerated.”

 

The offending players will receive a one-game suspension, two out-of-school suspension days and will be forced to attend cultural sensitivity training. Which, in Western New York is probably, “Look, it’s okay to think it and/or say it around your white friends, just not around blacks.” Batts’ family accepted the apologies, but thought the punishment should have been more severe.

 

“This wasn’t something that just developed this year,” Tyra’s father, Raymond Batts Jr., said. “This is something that’s been ongoing for quite some time.”
