Mayo’s Back On the Block According to the Memphis Commercial Appeal and first reported by Yahoo, that something looks like it’ll be O.J. Mayo. Because of the aforementioned three huge contracts on the team’s payroll (Randolph, Rudy Gay, and Marc Gasol), there’s little chance the team does much in terms of a lucrative extension for Mayo, so getting assets for him now, while the team is struggling, might not be a bad idea. Reports indicate New Jersey is the team making inquiries at the moment, possibly offering up Anthony Morrow in exchange for Mayo. Morrow makes $4 million this year and next and would then come off the books, while Mayo is on the hook for $5.6 this season, with a $7.4 million qualifying offer looming for 2012-2013, to say nothing of the sort of extension he’ll eventually command. From a financial standpoint, and without losing much in production via Morrow, the trade makes sense for Memphis. The other package New Jersey is reportedly offering centers around point guard Jordan Farmar, a draft pick, and cash. Neither offer is close to consummation, but the simple fact that conversations of this nature are even happening says Mayo is back on the block. Gaines can do a solid job as D-Will's backup, and if Dwight lands here, Arenas probably does as well. There has also been word floating around for a while that Farmar doesn't like his role. Tony Allen is way too important to that team to trade him for two lesser role players, both of which who make more money than him and I like Jack a lot. He is probably the best perimeter defender in the league and that ability to allow the Grizzlies to play single coverage on all of the stud wing players in the league is simply irreplaceable for the Grizzlies. He is arguably their 3rd most important player and having a shut down defender like him, who also isn't a liability on offense, is going to be huge for the Grizzlies come playoff time, just like it was for them during their run last season. EDIT- Although, I will say, Tony Allen pretty much is an offensive liability. He isn't good, or even average, by any means, but he can handle the ball better than most defensive specialists and is a good finisher around the rim. He can't really shoot from range and knows that so he doesn't really attempt many jumpers. He cuts well and makes smart decisions with the ball. You can get by with having him out there during late game situations as defenses have to pay attention to him due to these things. They can't just completely ignore him like some defensive specialists out there. Obviously if you need a basket you aren't going to be looking to go to him, but he doesn't force you to play 4 on 5 either. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

In all seriousness, Mayo is suffering from Michael Beasley syndrome. Even though Beasley sucks balls, at least he got a shot so we could know for sure... I want Mayo to get a fair shot at having a significant role on a team before we give up on him entirely. I just don't know how a rookie can average 19 points a game on Kobe type percentages then wind up what he is now. I still think there is a place for an OJ Mayo on a lot of teams in this league.
