According to ESPN New York's Stephen A. Smith, the Orlando Magic have inquired about acquiring Tyson Chandler and Amare Stoudemire in a trade for Dwight Howard. Howard can opt to test free agency after the season. The Magic are mulling the option of trading him before the season ends.

Magic GM Otis Smith has reportedly given Howard's agent permission to speak with the Nets, Lakers and Mavericks about possible trades. But Smith reported on ESPN New York 1050 on Sunday that the Magic have also talked with New York about a possible transaction involving Howard for Stoudemire and Chandler.

Until the Knicks get a halfway decent backcourt even with Dwight they won't be an improved team with that deal.

That's an agreeable statement but most of this teams dysfunction is because Carmelo and Amare just don't offer enough spacing for each other to co-exist.

That couldn't be further from the truth.

Their games just don't go well with one another either they both need to ball in their hands to be successful and neither creates for other guys or plays defense.

That's not true at all man. Stick with talking about the Heat.

Carmelo is a good defender when he cares to be. Amar'e, not so much. And Amar'e has been AWFUL with the ball in his hands, whether or not Melo is on the court or not. The whole mantra that they can't play together really humors me.

Melo is a good defender when he cares to be...but that is about 10% of the season, so that point is nullified.

And Flash's point about Amare needing the ball in his hands to be effective is to point out that it kills the offensive movement since Melo and Amare are both iso players that have little playmaking abilities.

Bottom line is they can play together, but they need a meticulously planned team built around them for the Knicks to have a chance at a title. The double iso thing will never work...you gotta make Amare almost exclusively a PnR player with a good playmaking PG (who can also hit the 3), and leave the iso's to Melo. Having them both be strictly iso players destroys team ball movement and lets defenses load up on both of them. It'd be one thing if Amare played in the post and was an elite passer from that spot, or Melo was the kind of playmaker LeBron/Kobe/Wade/prime T-Mac are/were, but they are not. Creating for others is not a strength of either player. Therefor, one of them will need to sacrifice the iso's, and the only way to make that work is a true, starting caliber PG who can facilitate the offense.

I agree completely. However, Carmelo's defense has been better this season. He's not a great defensive player, but it's gotten better. And in big games when he actually cares, it's definitely good.

Melo is one of the laziest defenders in the NBA. He is a decent on-ball defender but he constantly losses track of his man in off ball situations. Not to mention the fact that you will rarely see him rotate on defense. He's not a bad defender, but he is lazy as [expletive].

Howard in New York, teaming with Melo, would be an upgrade, even if the Knicks didn't make any other moves from that point until the end of the season. You have to consider what the hell Howard has done for the team he's playing on right now to truly realize how big of an impact he can be for any defense (or offense, for that matter).

Toney Douglas could get torched by Chalmers and Cole, and Melo can't hold LeBron to save his life...but on that end of the floor, the game gets five times easier with Howard in the paint. Still wouldn't give the Knicks a series win, but they wouldn't look like the Wizards, either.

You do this in a heartbeat. Add in another guy and take back Hedo and Big Baby. Would also love a Douglas/Duhon swap, though I'm not sure the Magic would dig that.. Duhon is good on the p&r and they'd be adding Amar'e.

Good deal for Orlando, as Amar'e runs the p&r with Jameer and Tyson brings the interior defense. Knicks improve on D and get a beast back to the basket guy to go with Melo's wing scoring, improved defense, and better rebounding.

Probably a pipe dream for now, but it'd be nice. Tyson can't be moved for a while anyway.

Under the new CBA Tyson can't be traded till March 1st but if we really ask ourselves is it truly better then let's say a package of Bynum + Pau if Lakers do offer that and what if the Clippers get in this by offering a Deandre Jordan paired with Caron Butler on March 1st salaries would match up and Clippers can perhaps throw in their own draft pick since they gave away the Timberwolves pick they had to New Orleans for CP3. Also can't forget about the Nets and depends on how Brook Lopez plays but reportedly were offering him before the injury with 2 future first round picks. These are all scenarios I'm just throwing out there but from what I heard Dallas best shot to get Howard is through S&T in the off season. The Clippers thing as I stated is really a stretch as the Orlando Magic Insider reported this on Twitter but you never know Clippers do have pieces for Howard.

And with the Nets he also reportedly back in December said Magic were using Nets to try to smoke out LA into giving Bynum + Gasol for Howard

The Lakers are sitting ducks right now. They're literally letting possible proposals go down without barging in with a counter, because if I'm Orlando I would grab Amar'e and grab Nash in the off-season. There's no reason why the Knicks would decline a trade like this, giving them a defensive stopper and a franchise big man. The only question remaining is if Dwight would be willing to stay in New York and buy into the system.
