Owner Real Deal Posted February 3, 2012 Owner Report Share Posted February 3, 2012 U.S. shuts 16 sports piracy websites pre-Super Bowl (Reuters) - Three days before Super Bowl XLVI, U.S. prosecutors said they seized 16 websites that illegally streamed live sports and pay-per-view events over the Internet, and charged a Michigan man with running nine of those websites. According to the government, the 16 websites provided links to give viewers easy access to other sites that hosted pirated telecasts from the National Football League, National Basketball Association, National Hockey League, World Wrestling Entertainment Inc ("WWE") and TNA Impact Wrestling. The latter is also broadcast on Viacom Inc's Spike TV. Prosecutors said such piracy costs leagues and broadcasters millions of dollars a year, and some of this cost is passed on to ticket buyers and sports network subscribers. "These websites and their operators deprive sports leagues and networks of legitimate revenue" in what amounts to "virtual thievery," said U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara in Manhattan, who announced the website seizures. The websites are firstrow.tv, firstrowsports.com, firstrowsports.net, firstrowsports.tv, hq-streams.tv, robplay.tv, soccertvlive.net, sports95.com, sports95.net, sports95.org, sportswwe.net, sportswwe.tv, sportswwe.com, xonesports.tv, youwwe.com and youwwe.net. As prosecutors announced the seizure on Thursday, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, expected to start in Sunday's Super Bowl against the New York Giants, admitted to reporters his own use of an illegal website. "Last year, you know, I was rehabbing my foot, you know, in Costa Rica, watching the game on an illegal Super Bowl website," he said in a video posted Thursday on the NFL website. "And now I'm actually playing in the game. So it's pretty cool."READ MORE That absolutely sucks.

DunkinDerozan
Thank god its still working. I rightfully pay for games of my favorite teams, but sometimes I want to watch games that are not available in my area. What was the point of seizing the site if part of it still works? NomarFachix
What was the point of seizing the site if part of it still works? It's not a part of the site, it's a completely different site.. just the same owners/whatever. .eu is a "Europa" site, not taking the time to look it up, but I'd guess the US doesn't have jurisdiction over a European domain? Need4Sheed
I have did everything from download copyrighted music and movies to writing the DMCA FAQs and notification process for a large company. Although it sucks seeing all these sites closed down I understand the reasoning. I feel bad for the music artists the most when their work is infringed. Copyright rules have been around forever yet people ignored it and so did most copyright owners. It's just that now they are being more active in limiting infringement. As for these streaming sites, if the shit is love on basic nonpay tv then there should be legal streaming sites that would limit all of this. As for events on premium channels or payperview I see no problem with them seizing them. If others have to pay for it then why should others get a free pass? Owner Real Deal Posted February 4, 2012 Author Owner Report Share Posted February 4, 2012 If others have to pay for it then why should others get a free pass?Well, that's just it...nobody really has to pay for it. Anyone with internet access can find it for free online. I mean, I understand why it's all being done (or presented and considered), but as far as PPV events go, I really don't care to spend an outrageous amount of money to see a one-round main event between two UFC fighters. Charging people $50 for those is just wrong, like paying $300 for Sunday Ticket (which is basically robbing everyone, especially when you get to see a 5-6 games on cable TV to begin with every Sunday -- the reason why NBA's League Pass will always be better).
