How would you guys feel if this went through. It can't work straight out Pau for Rondo but as Real Deal said on TLN if this were to go down it has to be JO + Rondo for Pau and possibly another rookie to get a deal done. Just to get everyone on here up with the game here is how the rumor started

MT: What's your level of communication with Jim Buss, and what have your recent conversations centered upon regarding the roster?

Kupchak: Jim and I talk on a regular basis, several times a week and in person several times a month (like today), and it's almost always about where we are as a team, how we can improve now and into the future. What about, in terms of changing the roster, depends where you are at a certain point. When Steve Blake went down, there was some immediate urgency to look around and see if there were another ball-handling guard out there; in the meantime, our coaches have given our two rookies a chance. I think they both have a bright future, but in the last week (Andrew) Goudelock has given that second unit an unexpected boost. Teams are going to scout him now and teams will adjust, and try to take away the things he does and he'll have to adapt, but that's just how it is as an NBA player. Still, that's lightened our sense of urgency a bit regarding the backcourt. But in general, when you look at our team, I know Fish (Derek Fisher) gets tired of hearing it but he isn't as young as he used to be, and Steve did go down with an unexpected injury, so you could say to yourself the area where we're lacking the most is in the backcourt. You still have to look at what's available that's better than what you have, and what it's going to cost. We do that. Guys that were waived, that are free agents, players in Europe or China ... but generally speaking, looking at our roster, we have an older backcourt that has to be addressed at some point.

MT: Would you like to address it before the trade deadline?

Kupchak: Well, if there were a way for us to get a 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard we'd love to do it … but that's not likely in February. So you look at other alternatives, and see if it's better than what you have. That's all.

And now today sources have came out and said the Lakers have inquired about a possibility of a Pau for Rondo swap

Applying that logic to the Trudell quote, there is exactly one 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard in the league.

Rajon Rondo.

Note: “ball-handling guard” is triangle-speak for a point guard.

Additionally, sources have told HOOSPWORLD that the Boston Celtics do have interest in Gasol for their All-Star point guard.

The Celtics have the potential for sizable cap room this summer but there is no true sense that Dwight Howard or Deron Williams would be within their reach.

The list of options after the top two stars is not especially impressive. The Celtics have almost no one inside to play next to Kevin Garnett, who is in the last year of his contract.

Jermaine O’Neal still starts for the team but is not exactly high impact and might be the salary ballast to make a Laker/Celtics trade possible. To be fair, Brandon Bass has had a solid year as a Celtic, but Boston is looking for a more significant inside player.

Gasol has two years on his deal after this season which happens to line up when Paul Pierce’s is set to expire.

The Celtics have shopped Rondo on a number of occasions. For a number of reasons, sources say Boston does not intend to rebuild their roster around Rondo.

The drop off from Rajon to second-year player Avery Bradley (a capable defender but not as experienced as a playmaker) may not be as significant to the Celtics as the void in the middle that Gasol would fill.

For both sides I'm asking you guys do you pull the trigger if your Boston? If your the Lakers do you pull the trigger?

By the way, keep it in mind: Boston has in fact shown interest in Gasol, and according to legitimate sources, they also aren't planning on having Rondo there for the future of the franchise (which many are saying it's because of Austin Rivers, who Doc wants to coach before he retires, and that makes perfect sense).

Boston/LA deal has 0 chance of happening. They arent going to trade us their all star point guard who is just entering his prime and watch him dominate with Kobe and Bynum.

Why would they deal Rondo for a horrible Gasol contract. It makes no sense and it wont happen.

Btw keep in mind, this is Boston were talking about. If theres any chance at all of them helping us then they wont even think about it. Were 1 behind them in all time championships, you think they're ready to give that up to us?

The Austin Rivers/Rondo thing is so out there and I doubt it happens. Austin is leaving after this season, there's no way Boston is ending up with a top 10 pick so that's just not happening unless a) they're retarded and trade Rondo to whoever drafts Austin or b) they're retarded and tank to end up with a top 10 pick or c) Danny Ainge is a [expletive]ing idiot.

they're retarded and trade Rondo to whoever drafts Austin

That has actually been discussed as well. I'll have to find the link later.

According to a few people, the Celtics believe in Avery Bradley. Big time. And they feel that Bradley won't be THAT big of an offensive threat to keep the ball out of Rivers' hands, which is why they are willing to shop Rondo, a traditional PG that needs the ball to be effective and to create for others.

I mean, looking at Bradley...he's not special on offense, but his defense? He has the potential to be the best defensive PG in the NBA.

I think Boston feels they can rake in a high enough pick, with their expiring contracts (or veteran leaders, whatever teams want to see them as) and their draft pick, to get Rivers and play him under his father. I'm not sure if Ray Allen will ever decline (joking, of course...but yeah), and he's a player that will either give your team a $10 million cut from the payroll, or provide them with excellent off-ball player that is still arguably among the best in the league...just an example. Would a team give away a top pick for Allen and Brandon Bass? Most certainly.

I just wouldn't trade a top 5 PG and then bank on the coach's son, who is a volume scorer and nothing more. Its just not smart. I'd rather deal Bradley for something similar if the reviews on him are that good.

I also think Rivers leaves but there have been rumblings that he is enjoying his time playing under Coach K and is considering staying for his sophomore season, which makes sense. He has shown that he can score the ball but still needs a lot of work on his overall game. He has no left hand, he has an inconcsistent jumper, poor decision maker and poor passer. If he manages to improve in these areas, he could quite possibly be looking at a top 8 pick next season.

If he comes out this season he is unlikely to be picked before the late lottery at best. He isn't going to be taken with a top 10 pick, at least not based on what he has shown so far this year and could find himself falling out of the lottery all together. Obviously a great ACC tournament, a great NCAA tournament and a great showing in pre-draft workouts could boost his stock but as of now, I don't see why he is going to be in the top 10.

He really should stay another season.

I do agree with you that it seems kind of far fetched. Trading Rondo just so that Doc can coach his son is ridiculous when you consider how good Rondo is and that Rivers is unlikely to ever reach that level of play.

As for the Rondo/Gasol thing, Boston would be stupid to do it. From a straight talent-for-talent perspective it makes sense. From a fit standpoint you can argue it makes sense as Boston needs a big and LA needs a point guard. JO could play the 4 beside Bynum and Pierce has thrived playing a point forward role.

That is all well and good but considering Gasol has at most a few more years at this level while Rondo has another 8 years or so at his current level of play. Why give up an in his prime 25 year old for a soon to be over the hill Gasol?

No one can spin this to make it seem like it makes sense for Boston to pull the trigger on this deal..Trading your best young asset is stupid, but doing so for Gasol is even more illogical. Gasol is not Boston's answer this year or in the future, not will he be more effective in games than Rondo. Boston is a team built on chemistry, trading the player who keeps this team together in a compacted season is asinine. It would take a true idiot to trade a top 5 PG that can only grow and is on one of the best contracts in the league.

And let's not forget, Hoopsworld is not the most credible source out there..

And don't get me started on Austin Rivers, he's in no way, shape, or form ready to leave Duke.
