Focal point offensively: High percentage big man or high volume scorer?

Watching the Knicks recently has really made me wonder whether they are better off putting the ball into Lin's hands and running pick and rolls with Tyson Chandler or giving the ball to Melo and let him create. Chandler is shooting at a staggering 70%. Granted, most of his 'shots' are dunks, but if he can convert them at such a high %, wouldn't the Knicks be better off running PnRs with Lin and Chandler/Amare rather than letting Melo isolate 50% of the time?

Which brings me to my question: if you were the coach, and you had a center like McGee, Pekovic or Chandler who can finish only around the rim and a high volume scorer like Nick Young, Beasley or Melo, who would you run your offense around?

Well, there's a huge difference between your first two scorers, and Carmelo Anthony. You're not going to be able to go to those two all game long, like you would Melo. Logically, you're going to think that your go-to guy should always be a big man, all because of his efficiency, but that's not the case because your advanced guards and forwards can actually do more with the ball (most of these cases), and the majority of your bigs will struggle from the free throw line, have trouble creating out of the post, struggle significantly against double teams, turn the ball over, and/or tire quickly.

Sure, Melo is not on the same level as Beasley or Young, but this year he has really been inefficient in scoring and make questionable decisions at times. He can do more with the ball, granted, but would it really be wise to just pass him the ball and watch him do work or would it be better for the Knicks to let Lin create and look for Chandler/Amare first?

Well, individually, guys like Chandler and McGee rely COMPLETELY on perimeter players and offensive rebounds to get their points. They can never be the focal point of an offense, while you will have more of a chance of generating offense with Young or Beasley.

These big guys thrive because of dribble penetration and open dunks.. You could not rely on them to be the focal point... Look what happens to bynum when he gets a good defender or double teamed... He basically disappears like against knicks. He even has more post game than most.
