Magic Johnson to launch a black television network

There was no point. He just had to deflect and resort to childish shit like that as usual.

childish shit? says the guy that tries to argue foreign policy without reading anything about history

the point of my post was to show that you are jumping to conclusions when you see something.

at the end of the day, this guy just wants to make a tv station that shows positive portrayals of black people on shows. let's be honest; not many positive portrayals of black people in the media really exist. the reason we still have racism is because people want to make a big [expletive]ing deal and whine about a black guy making a tv station that is trying to send a good message to black kids growing up in a bad environment.

No, the reason we still have racism is because for some reason, some people feel the need to separate themselves (like this instance) instead of trying to become one. Sounds corny as [expletive] but its the truth.

how do you think people breakthrough to big time television? they don't just get a role randomly. this is a good way to help promote young, talented black actors to land bigger roles. i'm honestly surprised that you and ecn oppose this, you have to complain every time a minority wants to have power like a white guy.

That's not what any of us are complaining about? And don't ever say some shit like that to me because I come from a minority background bitch. Your last sentence is completely untrue.

The only thing ECN has an issue with is him hiring only blacks which is very possible from the tone of the various articles out there.

My only point was that IMO its just unnecessary to make another network to glorify a specific ethnic group because separating ourselves because of whatever race we come from is just another way race relations won't improve the way we want them to. If a TV show is good it can make it on any channel, all you have to do is look at the show's that RD posted. How can you achieve equality when at the same time you want to separate yourself like this? It makes no sense.

Idk if they're good or not because I don't really watch them but just look at Tyler Perry's shows, IIRC they seem to have done decently on cable the past few years but I'm not 100% sure. If you come up with a good show, it will get played..plain and simple.

tyler perry's shows do not portray black families in a positive light. all he does is play on stereotypes making fun of black people, something that magic doesn't like. comcast was required to add diversity programming channels, and magic stepped up to the plate. you guys aren't complaining about about the other black channel or the hispanic channels being added.

and for [expletive]s sake, he never said he is only hiring black people

there is a difference between promoting black people and only hiring black people. CMT promotes country music and the culture of those who enjoy country music they do NOT hire only people who are a fan of country music

SMH, did you miss the different quotes about things "written, produced and directed by blacks" and then the "providing work for blacks who have had trouble making it in Hollywood"?

Sure there'll be some white extra's but lets be honest, it won't be too much more than that.

My problem is different than ECN's though as I've already stated.

As for the other channel's, DIddy's is a music channel and is teaming up with a white dude from MTV. Comparing a channel like this to a spanish speaking channel with news is completely different and I've already made the point on another page.

Stop making it out like ECN and myself have some personal vendetta out against blacks too. That's not the case at all and its actually offensive to be honest with you.

you're offended? good, maybe now you know how black people feel when you get pissed off that they are going to have a tv channel catered toward them

Again you totally miss the point of what I was trying to say but I'm not surprised at all. Pretty sure myself, ECN and Universe said all we needed to say.

LMAO, that's actually pretty good.

If they were to approach Magic and tell him he was encouraging racism by having his own black network, Magic could just turn around and say they encourage racism by having a problem with a black network.

And that, folks, is how racism REALLY works.

Does Magic Johnson want blacks to be taught by blacks because a white teacher doesn't relate to black kids?

I went to a catholic school that promoted religions of the world. Yes their main target was Catholics but they taught world religion and never failed me because I was religious and open to my beliefs.

In my current program dealing with children, we are taught that everyone is open to their culture. People who don't celebrate Christmas bring in things that matter to them and celebrate and learn their culture. The real world shouldn't be targeting race and it is seen everyday. Housewives of Beverly Hills has an all white cast and then of course Atlanta has mostly all blacks and they are married to football and basketball players so it is already happening.

Is anyone forced to watch Magic's show? No and that is why we all have freedom but I think the point being missed is the comments about hiring African Americans to hire on the show. I've brought up the point of if someone else in the community openly said they'd hire only white kids from the suburbs to create a show because Magic Johnson show about overcoming poverty and creating dreams doesn't relate to them, they'd be called stupid.

Again it's everyone's opinion which makes our world so great is that we get to share thoughts together. Unfortunately efforts like this miss the main point entirely that color should have no effect in anyone's decision because in the end, we all live and die the same.

I actually agree with ECN (omfg I think I just puked in my mouth).

It is illegal to hire solely based on race, and if Magic openly does this he will have lawsuits filed against him.

However, I wouldn't necessarily trust that one line in the article to jump to that conclusion. I am sure Magic has a team of lawyers that would advise him how to properly run his own television channel in accordance with the law. To believe anything else is kinda stupid.

That's all I was saying. I never said it was wrong to "cater" to a certain group because EVERY television station does that, but to come and and say you're going to hire based upon race is illegal.

I can't tell if lkr is just trying to be stupid and intentionally manipulating my words to make it sound like something else, or if he truly is as dumb as he is sounding. I never once said there was a problem "catering" (word you used) to a certain group. I said it's illegal to come out and state that someone will hire based upon race like he stated, and actually follow through with his views.

Why state the obvious? I think everyone in this topic knows it's illegal to do that.

From the start, your issue was that he DID state that, and I'm one that's saying he never stated it...and as Nitro said, there's no way he's going to do that. His channel wouldn't make it on air longer than a month if he went that route.

And, that's exactly what I said. I said "I can't wait for Magic Johnson to get sued" if he went through with what he said. A lot of you are arguing something completely different and irrelevant to what the point of the topic was.

Anyways, this has already been beaten to death in this thread, and nothing else needs to really be said.

It's getting pathetic today when companies have to hire "minorities" to make everything "fair", then you have high profiled minority people doing crap like this.

Enjoy your getting sued out the ass goals of 2012 you bum.

"Oh, but times change, so I'll throw out the Constitution when it suits my desires".

And, show me a quote where BET states that they are going to only hire blacks and have only blacks produce their programs.

"Produced and directed by blacks" is pretty cut and dry. However, you'll try sand claim that he could have meant blacks and whites will work together, but we both know that's not true.

No, you clearly stated that he DID say he would only hire blacks. Your entire topic was created because you quickly assumed that's what he's saying.

But, yeah...your mistake.
