Trash talk, or constructive criticism, for LeBron James?

When LeBron passed on the attempted game-winner in the ASG last night (the one where he passed to Blake Griffin by accident), Kobe was in his face, asking him why he didn't take the shot and telling him that he should have. Carmelo was in the mix, with an "ouch" look on his face, almost smiling at it...at the fact that Kobe (who was on the opposing team and defending LeBron) was actually telling him to take that shot.

(happens at 17 seconds)

LeBron confirms that Kobe was telling him to shoot the ball in those key stages that led to late turnover.

So was Kobe trash-talking, or was he giving out constructive criticism to James?

Skip Bayless seems to think Kobe was trash-talking.

"All Kobe cares about is winning basketball games, even exhibition games." - Skip

Stephen A. Smith thinks otherwise, citing how Kobe stated that Carmelo shouldn't change his game just because of an emerging Jeremy Lin, and that he cares to see others trying to step up in moments that may or may not involve him.

IMO he was being constructive. I'm sure Kobe likes and respects LeBron, all these guys are friends so they wanna see one another succeed, especially someone as talented as LBJ who's the face of the league right now.

It's starting to get a little awkward seeing all of these basketball analysts and former players go at LeBron for many different things. Even fans are doing it more than they used to, but when journalists, analysts and players get in on it, you have to think that something is wrong.

Not that I have a problem with it, since I think it's hilarious (because I can't stand him)...but stepping outside of that box, it's sad to see it happen.

Found this kind of funny, relating to the final shot:

Kobe was just trying to motivate LeBron to be more aggresive in those moments; LBJ even agree's with KB as he kept referring to that key turnover in his post game interveiw with Craig Saiger...

no one else thinks he shouldn't have shot? If he shot the ball, it would have been a pretty horrible one. I just don't think he should have been looking at Wade with Melo wide open.

I agree. On that play where he made the bad pass, he was being defended by Kobe nearly 30ft out, with I believe Durant coming over to trap. He made the wrong choice, but shooting a fadeaway 30ft jumper wouldn't have been much better.

I have a bigger issue with him being the in-bounds guy on the very last play.

I feel like those were both set plays from Thibs. He had the option to pass to Melo and Dwyane out of that TO. Wrong decision.

That's the thing... do you think Kobe would have been okay with being the inbounder?

Obviously, Lebron is a much better passer than Kobe but at the end of the day people (including Kobe) want to see Lebron take the final shot.

I think during the previous play where Lebron turned it over Kobe was "trash talking" but it was more along the lines of "son I am disappoint" rather than "you [expletive]ing suck bro".

The pass that was turned over was not a set play...it was a broken play off an offensive rebound from a Deron Williams 3 (which I thought wasn't a bad play to run, and he did get a good look).

Right that's what I was saying, the original play was a set play to D-Will as well as the play where he inbounded it.

QOUTE . 03.03.2012. ESPN . KOBE BRYANT NO RIVALS IN CAREER

  • "I think everybody kind of took it out of context in terms of his performance last year in the Finals, like I was out there thinking about that or something," Bryant said. "It was more so the challenge that I wanted. I wanted him to try to score. I wanted that challenge [to guard him]. So, I was more upset than anything that I didn't get a chance to face that." Dave McMenamin . ESPN
