March Madness 2012 Discussion Thread

I'm shocked at how this game has gone.

Out of all the 3rd round games for the #1 seeds, I thought Michigan St. would have the easiest time whether it was St. Louis or Memphis, even if they were the 4th ranked #1.

I did not think it would be this close. I still think they are going to win and can see them pulling away in the final 2:30, but I thought it would be a relatively easy game for the Spartans.

Green taking over with a jumper on one end and then a block on the next. He may not be much of an NBA prospect, but he is an awesome college player.

Green goes up and grabs the rebound between 3 St. Louis players.

He has really left his mark on this game int he last few minutes with some huge plays. The best is he has done everything. A huge jumper, a block, an assist for a 3 and then that last rebound. He has such an all around impact.

is it just me or is barnes the most overrated player in the game?

I don't know.

I can understand why somebody would think that he is overrated (although he isn't close to being the most overrated player in college) based on his numbers and role on the team, but another part of me thinks that if he was in a different system he would thrive.

UNC's double-post motion offense leaves little opprotunity for the wing players. It is all about feeding the ball into Henson and Zeller on the block or having Marshall get into the paint. The wing players are used more as spot up shooters and as an out for when defenses collapse on the big men in the post. The only times they are really expected to do any dribbling is when they have a straight-line to the basket or improving the passing angle when feeding the ball into the post. It leaves guys like Barnes. Bullock and Hariston little chances to do anything with the dribble. Their entire offense is based on feeding the ball into the post or have Marshall create off the bounce or in transition.

So I'm not sure what to think. He obviously isn't the can't miss prospect that everybody thought coming out of high school, but I also think in a different system or in the NBA where the lane isn't as congested and there is a lot more spacing he would look a lot better.

Marshall going off right now, though. He puts together games like this and UNC makes a deep run, he will be picked in the lottery, assuming he declares.

That was an awful flop by Zeller. Double Zero is dominating him on offense.

In response to your comments on Barnes, I agree somewhat. I feel like he has a ton of potential, but is a tad inconsistent. People talk about him as a first round draft pick, but he really needs to come back to school and develop a lot more

As much fun as it is to watch huge upsets like Norfolk St. over Missouri yesterday, it does really suck for the later rounds when we get games like Florida vs. Norfolk St.

The Gators are currently on a 24-0 run right now and have a 22 point lead 10 minutes into the game.

What a circus shot from Henson.

Also, as much as I like Barnes, he is looking like shit this game. Does a simple crossover and nearly losses it out of bounds, can't absorb the contact to finish the layup, gets his own rebound and instead of going up strong he avoids contact and ends up with an air ball.

Barnes finally showing some life hitting back-to-back 3's from the top of the arc. He has still been bad today, and even I can't try and spin this on the system as part of the reason why. He has just played poorly on the offensive end (his defense has been solid, though).

You can tell that UNC is trying to get him going for the next game, since this one is basically wrapped up already.

Tar Heels are done.

They might get by Ohio without Marshall, but no chance in hell they are going to get any further than that. Terrible timing.

Anyways, this Lehigh/Xavier game has been pretty good. Lehigh had an early 15 point lead, Xavier came back to take a 7 point lead, Lehigh came back to tie it at 50 and now Xavier is back up by 6 with 4 minutes left.

Well, that screwed my bracket. And to think, i was having a pretty decent year.

Creighton going goon squad is just classless. I don't doubt that they were instructed to play that way while UNC was beating that ass. UK's title is now guaranteed unless Baylor or Xavier pulls off a miracle.

Harrison Barnes better grab this team by the horns now though.

Like I said on Facebook...

The triangle and two should have been put into place long before the first half ended. I'm not saying it was a bad idea to start with man-to-man, but once you find yourself in a hole because of a streaky team drilling threes (and basically being dominated by one shooter, who pulls your bigs away from the rim), you have to make the change. Also, I'm not sure if I agree with Kerr, wanting to go back into Robinson so much, because he really wasn't making the right decisions once he got the ball, and that's what separates the future superstars from your lottery picks. With that said, the defense in the second half was executed much better, and because of the change, Hummel was playing under tired legs, and KU crawled out on top. Nearly VCU all over again, though.

Yeah, I was scared at one point. Before the game, I told my girl it was going to be ugly, and that Purdue is a nasty team if they start launching...and sure the hell enough, they were dropping bombs in that first half.
