Kendall Marshall Fractures Wrist

Recommended Posts

Tar Heel point guard Kendall Marshall, who had 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting with 11 assists in Sunday's win over Creighton, broke his right wrist midway through the second half.

Tar Heels guard Kendall Marshall fractured his wrist Sunday.CAPTIONBy Bob Donnan, US PresswireMarshall was injured when he was fouled by Ethan Wragge on a drive to the basket with 10:56 remaining. Marshall jumped up after being knocked to the floor and made one of two free throws. But those were his final points of the game. He missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 7:09 remaining and did not shoot again, although he had two assists before coming out of the game with 1:54 to play.

"Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first," UNC coach Roy Williams in his opening remarks at the post-game press conference. "Kendall's got a fracture of the scaphoid bone of the right wrist. We'll speak to the hand specialist tonight with Kendall and his family and we'll see what happens after that."

Marshall was asked how he reacted when he was told of injury.

"It hurt, it hurt," Marshall said. "Like I said, first and foremost I hurt for my team. I want to be there to be able to help them to the best of my ability. What they told me, I took it a little harsh, told my parents, we took it a little harsh. But, I'm looking forward to getting back on the road and getting back to Chapel Hill.

"Our players have a will to win, and the last thing a player's going to do is let a sickness or injury get in the way of a game that they want to win. So, I didn't want to come out. Coach asked me if I wanted to, I said no, I was good. But, obviously late in the game it tested me a little bit."

The one piece of good news is that Marshall is left-handed and this is his right wrist.

"That's the most positive thing," Marshall said. "If it was my left hand I'd be telling y'all right now I'm not playing next week. Being that I was still able to be out there and help my team out and get them, in positions… that's encouraging.

Safe to say UNC's chances of winning a National Championship have pretty much evaporated.

No Marshall (

No Strickland

No McDonald

Terrible news.

This injury sucks, but UNC's soph's and juniors might just come back if they can't win it all this year. I don't think Barnes leaves if they don't win it all.

I don't see why Barnes wouldn't leave. Especially considering he hasn't mentioned plans of staying that ive heard

He actually has mentioned the possibility of staying if the Heels don't win a National Championship. He REALLY wants to win a National Championship.

Barnes, who said his chances of coming back are "up in the air" if the Tar Heels don’t win it all, had just scored 23 points in his eighth-ranked team’s 73-64 win over Miami at BankUnited Center.

"Guys come back in the summer from (the title season of) ’09 and you got guys who come back from (the title one of) ’05," Barnes said. "Everybody’s talking about a championship this year, a championship that year. As current group, you're like, I want to be in that rarified air. I want to be one of those guys. I want to hang a banner… I think we have all the pieces (to win it all)... If we’re hot at the time, I feel we can really run the table."

If they win it all (highly unlikely now with Marshall's injury), he is 100% gone, but if they don't I could see him staying.

Time for Barnes to play up to everyone's expectations. Future all-star play.

I just don't see how UNC will hang around without their playmaker, though. Marshall has been amazing all season long.

ST. LOUIS -- North Carolina point guard Kendall Marshall said he does not know whether he will be able to play when his top-seeded team plays No. 13 Ohio on Friday in the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals.

"Every day it's getting better, but it's a day-to-day basis, whether I'm going to play," Marshall said Thursday. "If we had to jump ball right now, I wouldn't be playing."

Marshall had surgery Monday to place a screw in his right wrist, which he fractured during Sunday's win over Creighton. His cast was removed Wednesday, and the left-handed ballhandler is now wearing a removable splint.

He did not practice with the team Thursday morning, he said, and has not handled a basketball since his injury.

Tar Heels coach Roy Williams says he "just doesn't know" whether Marshall will be in the lineup, adding that the sophomore hasn't even been able to brush his teeth yet.

Marshall said it ultimately will be his decision as to whether he is ready to play, and there will be two main factors: "The pain, and the range of motion," he said. "If I can get a good amount of range of motion in my wrist, and I can go out there and compete and not play in any pain, those are the two things I'm looking for."

He added the possibility of not playing "bothers me a lot; I think it would bother any competitor. You want to be able to help your team out, but I'm trying to flip this into a positive. I don't want to put my hand in danger of getting hurt. And another big thing is, I want to be able to help my team while I'm out there. And if I can't help my team while I'm out there, I'm not going to play."
