Bynum plans to keep shooting 3-pointers — even after coach’s benching

Andrew Bynum didn't see much action after missing badly on a 3-pointer against the Warriors on Tuesday.

OAKLAND, CA – In the latest episode of the Los Angeles Lakers’ long-running soap opera, suddenly 3-point-happy center Andrew Bynum was sent to the pine for not playing “the right way,” one game after Kobe Bryant was benched.

Bynum made the first 3-pointer of his seven-year career in seven attempts in a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday. Feeling suddenly confident in his deep jumper, the All-Star surprisingly tossed up another that didn’t fall as the Lakers held a 56-50 lead with 10:05 left in the third quarter against the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night. Bynum was sent to the bench shortly after the ill-fated shot and appeared to play uninspired while missing all three field-goal attempts in the fourth quarter before sitting out the final 9:10 of the Lakers’ 104-101 victory.

More Lakers Drama: Bynum Fined

HANG TIME HEADQUARTERS – Lakers All-Star center Andrew Bynum is making headlines in Los Angeles again, but for all the wrong reasons.

On top of last week’s benching, it appears that the Lakers fined Bynum for a number of transgressions that have occurred recently, per published reports in Los Angeles. Dave McMenamin of ESPNLosAngeles.com provides some details:

Bynum recently was fined an undisclosed amount for “numerous infractions,” multiple sources confirmed to ESPNLosAngeles.com. One of the stunts that warranted the fine from the team was Bynum blowing off a meeting with Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak. Bynum told ESPNLosAngeles.com he was unaware of the fine before getting into his car outside the Lakers practice facility and driving away after the team’s shootaround in preparation for their game against the New Jersey Nets on Tuesday. Bynum did tell the website, though, he will not play in Tuesday night’s game after suffering a moderate sprain of his left ankle in the first quarter of a game against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.

The sprain did not require an MRI on Monday and X-rays on Bynum’s ankle were negative, but Bynum did not participate in the Lakers’ shootaround on Tuesday. Bynum used the shootaround time for treatment, which included anti-inflammatory medicine. Lakers coach Mike Brown had said Bynum’s status would be a game-time decision. “I can’t play,” Bynum said while wearing tape around his left ankle. “Hopefully (Wednesday against the Clippers).”

Andrew Bynum Will Skip 2012 Olympics to Undergo Knee Procedure

LA Lakers center Andrew Bynum is giving up the chance to be an Olympian this summer in favor of having the same knee procedure teammate Kobe Bryant underwent during the 2011 offseason. According to the Los Angeles Times' Mike Bresnahan, Bynum will not participate in the 2012 London Olympics because in addition to having the operation, he also wants extra rest. Bynum told Bresnahan on Friday:

I've got to take care of my legs in the off-season. I've got some things planned for my knees. … I've got to do some therapy that I'm going overseas to do.

Lakers pick up option on Bynum for next season

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Lakers have exercised their $16.1 million contract option for next season on All-Star center Andrew Bynum. Los Angeles announced the move Monday. General manager Mitch Kupchak confirmed last month the Lakers would exercise the option.

Bynum is coming off his best NBA season after averaging career highs with 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds while making his first All-Star team, starting for the West. He was the NBA's third-leading rebounder and 20th-leading scorer while also ranking sixth in the league with 1.93 blocked shots per game.

Bynum also avoided the injuries that have dogged him throughout a seven-year career since the Lakers made the New Jersey high schooler the youngest player ever drafted in 2005. Bynum played in 60 of the Lakers' 66 regular-season games, missing four due to suspension.
