John Wall Shot 27.6% Outside of 3-Feet This Season

Recommended Posts

Was posted on another message board and, well, it is ugly:

Teams managed to neutralize his speed in the half court by staying back and daring him to beat them with his jumper, which he had little confidence in and took reluctantly. Wall made 61.9 percent of his shots inside three feet (237 for 383), but he struggled to connect from everywhere else. He shot just 27.6 percent (141 for 511) from three feet and beyond and Thorpe said his three-point shot “fell off the face of the earth.” He missed 39 of his 42 attempts from long distance; his 7.1 percent accuracy ranks as worst among any player to make a three-pointer this season.

“For two years, he’s regarded league-wide as a talented player with a couple of exceptional physical attributes, his speed in particular. But he seems to be a little stubborn in adjusting to the NBA game,” said an Eastern Conference advance scout, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not at liberty to make comments on behalf of his team. “You get the sense on the whole, he’s not doing a lot of thinking the game yet. He’s kind of run into a little bit of roadblock as far as understanding why what he’s doing isn’t good enough yet. I do feel there is a lot more that’s still there.”

That is absolutely brutal.

The scary thing is that I think we call all agree he is a fairly effective player already. He certainly hasn't lived up to the hype so far, but he is still a threat out there. If he ever is able to develop a jumper, it really is scary how good he can be. He managed to average 16 points a game despite the fact that he can barely hit a shot outside of layups and dunks.

he had to deal with the wizards, which made him angry and agitated

a good 3 point shooter is always mentally calm like steve kerr

they don't have a lot of stress messing their shot up

Wall had to worry about Blatche being overweight, JaVale running wrong plays,

Nick Young ballhogging, Coach losing his job

that's a lot of things to think about when your shooting a 3 point shot....VERY Understandable.

We're never solely talking about his 3 point shooting. He's shooting 28% outside "3 feet". That's just absurd. Blaming his shooting woes on the aforementioned factors is laughable. He was drafted #1 overall for a reason, he'll have a really short career if he continues to shot like that.

No excuses for his shooting, but people forget that John Wall does everything pretty well besides his outside shooting/turnover problem. He's the 3rd best rebounding pg behind Rondo, and Westbrook. He's the best shot blocking pg by far. He's 7th in assists per game. He also gets to the line well for a pg (6.1 atpg). It's so frustrating watching him lose confidence in his J, he can't do that if he wants to be the franchise player. He is a 79% free throw shooter, so you might wonder why he can't hit mid range jumpers consistently. He has a bad tendency to shoot his jumper on the way down or fadaway to his right. If you watch him in practice/workouts, he makes shots consistently, but they are set shots or shots where he jumps like 2 inches off of the ground. He works on his shot with Sam Cassell (who was an excellent mid range shooter/post player.) He just has to keep his form consistent; straight up and down, and stay confident in his shot. He said he would work on his 3pt shot this summer and play in less charity games. Lets see if/how much he improves next season. The Wizards need some outside shooting, J-Wall can personally help out with that.
